Starting to plan what to make for christmas dinner this year.

Last year was:-

Roast turkey, (standard)

boiled then roasted ham, having the ham really brought out the flavour of the turkey,

Yorkshire pudding, (standard)

honey roast parsnips, (standard)

roast potatoes, (standard)

par boiled in orange juice chantanay carrots, then roasted (came out really nice, will do again)

carrot and swede mash, (standard)

bacon, made into a lattice and draped over the turkey, allowing the bacon fat to baste the turkey,

mashed potato, (standard)

sage and onion stuffing and chestnut stuffing, (standard)

pigs in blankets, (standard)

plum and sloe gin cocktail sausages,

turkey gravy and (standard)

cranberry and blueberry sauce (the blueberries added a lovely sweetness to the cranberries)

now that’s one hell of a spread

Since you already have roast potatoes, I’d garlic up that mash just to give it a different flavor from plain potato.

Otherwise, why mess with success? That looks real yum.

The mashed potato is with milk, butter and salt and pepper. I suppose I could make some colcann on mash (green cabbage, nutmeg and spring onions) to go with the regular mashed potato for variety.

I don’t think you can go wrong either way, I just love garlic mashed potatoes.

I may add a touch of garlic but most of them aren’t garlic fans.

Ah, then to hell with what I said. I fucking love garlic, but you gotta know your audience.

Lol. Some people aren’t all that adventurous.

My brother in law only eats Pot-Noodles (I guess you’d call them instant ramen) or fish and chips. Seriously, he’s 52-53 and that’s all he eats, oh and the occasional KFC.

Switch it to a white F-150 and you’ve probably got mine. I’m off Christmas Eve but work and start a week of on-call Christmas morning. Oh, and the on-call portion doesn’t end till New Year’s Day.

Bro, it’s November, just make seven different types of fish and pasta  like the people who invented the holiday and killed Jesus.

I was an extremely picky eater when I was a kid but that changed as I got older and my palate changed. There are too many delicious things to eat out there to severely limit yourself like that.

That said, I do love the occasional instant ramen (Korean varieties are my favourite), and I am deeply in love with anything deep fried like fish & chips or KFC.

Ouch, that sucks. I won’t be getting much time off work myself.

Work still gave me a flexibility questionnaire , I said I’ll do my contract and they can sod off for the rest.

Nah. I don’t like religion, I can’t abide christmas but I do like cooking.

Christmas morning. I enter the kitchen with a bottle of Irish whiskey, the top comes off, never to see the bottle again. I cook, serve and mourn the passing of the whiskey.

Nobody comes into the kitchen for any longer than it takes to make a coffee or I shoo them out, they want an opinion on what I’m cooking, after I’ve already taken their needs into account, well they can keep those opinions to themselves. Lol.

Yeah, that sucks.

I’m holding out for a lottery win and tell management they can put the job where their head is and have a relaxing christmas. Lol.

We typically just spend Christmas with our immediate family. Me, my wife and our two kids. We’ve picked a different meal each year. Ribs, lobster and steak, DIY pizza, fried turkey and donuts have all been on the menu at one time or another. We do a full up dinner with the in-laws over New Years. By that time I’m pretty tired of turkey and ham.

We always have a good selection of jello salads. I also like to mix up the meat side. Beef spare ribs or rack of lamb are a nice change up to the traditional ham or turkey. I’ve even done a taco bar for Christmas dinner and gone out to eat for Chinese food.

Two days before Christmas Eve my dad and siblings figure out what we’re all making. We bring it to my grandma’s house Christmas Eve, eat, drink, party. Then my brother and I get drunk and watch Rare Exports. Christmas morning everyone comes over my house and we make breakfast (crepes, eggs, potatoes , mimosas) while the kiddos open presents.

I’m not religious anymore, but I still teach my kids the fundamentals. Find a solid group of friends who have your back, watch out for the sellouts, and don’t be dicks to people who have less than you.

A small, simple pot roast in a crock pot wouldn’t really add to your workload and would add a beef option to your turkey and ham mix . Some manner of soup, stew, or chowder might also be an interesting addition, especially if it’s one that can be ready to eat early and kept warm until real dinner time.

I think that you, James May, and I cook the same way - while drinking a lot.

It always reminds me of that episode of The F Word where James May beats Gordon Ramsay in a cooking competition whilst cocking about and drinking heavily during prep/cook.

If I ever go to the UK I think we’ll need to hang out, drink whisky, and cook.

I think you need to change things up with some liver, haggis, tripe, cookie dough spaghetti, cotton candy tacos and deep fried avocado.

OR...

Just make a giant spaghetti-stuffed meatball everyone feeds off of:
