Wait, you mean that’s not how this works?
2008 Toyota
Sienna. Power steering pump is leaking, and the steering rack
boot on the passenger side is shredded, and beginning to leak. The rear main seal is also leaking. They said if I get the steering rack replaced at the same time as the rear main seal, it would save a bit, as there’s some overlap in the labour. So I guess it’s actually not going to be quite that bad. But still by far the biggest repair bill I’ve ever had. That’s more than half the price we paid for the van, roughly a year and a half ago.

Christ, that repair bill is more than what most of my vehicles are worth, combined!

Ouch! I just took my BMW in to service some more electrical gremlins. Probably the alternator now. Pray for me oppo.

These are the times I am glad I have a ridiculously uncomplicated Accent. 0_o
Did you expect it to be that high?

Man, we owned 3 high-mileage BMWs over ~11 years and never saw a bill like that. In fact you could buy a pretty good high-mileage BMW for that kind of money...

I’ve had engines and transmissions replaced for less. Is that a dealer or an indy?

At $5 per quart of oil, you could just keep adding oil (900 times) and have money left over for a spill tray and some floor-dry

Ooof, I want a Sienna but I’ve never had a repair bill that high for anything. Hell, I’ve only owned one car that really cost more.

Maybe I’ve just read too much Oppo, but don’t forget to check the ground connection, wherever it may be. It seems like a lot of electrical gremlins are caused by bad grounding.

The van is normally parked out front, so it’s slowly re-coating the asphalt. I’d like it to last at least another 100,000 km, so I figure repairing it is probably the best way to handle that. It’s also Mrs. BaconSandwich that drives it, and I’d hate for it to die on her somewhere.

I knew it was going to be bad, and honestly, I wasn’t too surprised. I figured the steering rack was going to go, and the original quote I had on it for labour was something like $600-$800. Plus another $500-600 in parts. But the oil leak I couldn’t figure out... yeah. I was thinking it was either going to be an oil cooler line, oil pan gasket, or something else. I was worried when I saw the oil on the spot between the engine and transmission.

Indy. It’s also in Canadian dollars, so you could knock that price down by 30% because of the exchange rate.

215,000 km.
It had over 190,000 when we bought it, and we’ve had it about a year and a half. Bought it from an elderly couple who had it parked in their garage. It was pretty much m
int condition. Since we bought it, the kids have made a bit of a mess of the interior (nothing that can’t be cleaned), and the neighbor’s kid scraped the side of it with his bike handlebars. (Something like that was bound to happen, so I wasn’t mad about it. Just glad they fessed up). We plan on keeping it a while, so I figure it’s still cheaper than selling it and getting a different van at this point.

Yeah, but then I’d have a high mileage BMW, and a high repair bill. :P
For a while I was toying around with the idea of getting a used BMW i3 REx. (Idea was eventually nixed when we discovered it only has two seats in the back), but the idea of owning a BMW scared me a bit. I always thought any sort of repairs to them would be brutally expensive.

Well, I can’t complain about that in this case. I know the guy who works there, and he was pretty honest with me about what they could/couldn’t do. I think I’d trust them more than taking it to a dealership to have it done there.

It’s nice when you have a shop like that. For me, that shop is actually my dealership. I’ve got the worlds best service rep.

Yeah. I was hoping it was going to be a little more trouble-free, but I’m slowly becoming less and less impressed with Toyota. E.g.: the lug nuts have got to be the cheapest ones I’ve ever seen. That, and the cup holder button (makes the cup holder pop out) seems like it’s half dislocated. There’s a few other small things like that that make me wonder if Toyota isn’t cheaping out on things.

Only a few very minor things:
- Cup holder eject button (makes the cup holder that pushes into the dashboard) is half-dislocated.
- The thing up by the driver/passenger interior lights that can store a garage door opener has a piece of broken plastic in it.
- There’s a hole worn through the carpet where the driver’s gas/brake
heel goes.
Other than that, it’s mint.

Yeah. It’s definitely more than the van’s previous vehicle (a Pontiac Vibe) and my Civic put together.

It is. Great guy, honest, knowledgeable, knows I’m nursing a 16 year old van and only recommends what it really needs. Still paying dealership rates, but not getting ripped off.

The last time I took my car in to a local place for something, I wasn’t super impressed. This other place has been pretty good so far. With the inspection, they text and email a report with photos. There was a few small things they spotted (a broken vacuum hose, low coolant, a few other small things), but they had photos to back everything up that they were saying. I thought the report thing was pretty neat, especially instead of taking someone’s word on it.

Yeah, definitely minor stuff...if it’s in that decent a shape, it’s prob
def worth repairing for sure.
