There has to be some sort of baseline forum code package like VW Vortex. We had a backup forum for MLD years ago that didn’t take long to put up.

At this point, I’m leaning towards weening oppo off kinja. Kinja’s been full of more and more problems and I don’t like the thought that the ad revenue (however small it might be) generated by oppo goes to support the upper management of g/o. I’d rather leave on our terms than to check oppo one morning to find that it’s gone.

I’m useless when it comes to making websites happen, but I’m happy to help in any other way that I can.

Thank you! I imagine you are like most. I’d be in exactly the same spot if I didn’t start this ball rolling in the first place . Honestly the best way most of the community will be able to help once we get the technical bits figured out is to simply show up. The whole thing will go nowhere fast if those who do show don’t see the rest of our community using it.

I posted on the site with some ideas. I think with Amazon link profits, plus patreon in the interim we could easily find the funding to pay for hosting and whatever ongoing costs are associated with a commenting platform that solves the issues you’ve outlined. The main cost issues I see going forward will be image hosting, plus the associated legal issues which will need to be address either by an implied EULA or offsite hosting.

It sure would be great to move over entirely, but there are an aw ful lot of things that would need to be sorted to have it be a clean move and there is going to need to be a certain skillset that may or maynot cost money involved in setting that up.

Ideally you should setup an informal or formal trustee group to keep the site from becoming a burden to you to finance or run daily.

Yes, you could go down the phpbb or vbulle ti n road, but then Oppo becomes a forum. T here are yins and yangs to that, such as fragmentation etc etc. (see NASIOC or VW Vortex) but it is a easy way to provide a tool for posting .

Personally I think of Oppo as more of a blog ( as opposed to a forum) where the patients run the asylum . It’s a nuance that makes all the difference in the world IMO.

MAYBE a site with the same architecture as fark.com would kinda work, but I dunno.

I have no technical help for this but I’m willing to chip financially for bandwidth or server space. Do we a go fu nd me or anything.

And a huge thanks to everyone working on this. The internet wouldn't be the same for me without Oppo.

Thank you! As soon as I figure out the multi -author thing I will start down the road of community funding. I’m ok shou ldering the startup costs until we get it to the point that others can be signed up as authors and we have the basic bones of what Kinja offers today. Just scratching the surface of available tools now.

Hit me up next time you’re in San Diego and the first round is on you! One of Stone ’s restaurants is walking distance from my house :)

So I like where everyone’s head is at with this ‘find an actual replacement for Kinja’ thing. And I especially like that you were proactive enough to actually purchase the domain. I’ll gladly follow this band of vaguely automotive postings wherever it winds up, but I do hope we can all come to a consensus on where and when to go first.

I know there is at least one facebook group and several slack groups, the discord gourp , you have this now, and Nick has an Exxocet has a pretty nice looking wordpress blog set up with the same thoughts . I know right now we’re in the ‘experiment and find something that will work best’ phase, but I do hope we can collaboratively work together and then decide on an ultimate solution rather than start fragmenting as a community.

My vote now would be something along the lines of what Nick is doing to mimic the current look and feel somewhat in Wordpress, but then host it somewhere under the oppositelock domain you have. Like many others have offered here, I’d gladly offer a few bucks a month or any help I could give to get things going. I work in software, and although most web development I’ve done is personal and I haven’t hosted anything in a couple years, I’m happy to help with anything if needed.

Thank you! I agree on all points, btw. I want this first and foremost to be about the community and to be as inclusive as possible to anyone who’s been part of what made it so special from the very beginning. Do me a favor and send me a message through the oppositelock.com link so I can reach out when the time comes?

Welp, I made an account... twice so I don’t think I am the help you are looking for. I think I switched back to my Snakesm13 name on your site. Funny enough I switched from that to my actual name in hopes to be taken more serious by Jalopnik when they were looking to hire. Bullet Dodged?

I don’t want to rain on the parade, and I genuinely love this project, but do we have rights to use the oppositelock name? I just don’t want to see that get shut down too. Otherwise, I flunked out of computer science so I’m not much help but could also con tribute to a gofundme.

I’m no lawyer but ownership of the URL lets me use it pretty much how I’d like. They have no claim over the idea of an auto enthusiast forum. Th e worst they could do is issue a a C&D over the user of the logo ... which lol, ok! I create a new one in comic sans.

Awesome, I was just worried they had trademarked "oppositelock" or something, but I'm way less of a lawyer than you.

Where’s that one post that gets updated every once in a while with all of the banner logos we’d had here over the years? I don’t remember who authored it. Might be worth archiving just in case.

As for the name itself, IANAL but I wonder if it would be enough to simply add “.com” to the name officially, and distinguish “Oppositelock.com” as a separate entity from “Oppositelock” if needed.
