While true, it’s more a protest and solidarity action. The fact that your writers are more willing to jump ship than to wait for a parachute says plenty. And if they’re left behind with lower quality or staff - or no staff - then the site is effectively dead in the water.

Several oppo members are working on building a new oppo which will live at the oppositelock.com domain. That is where we will hopefully end up if things go south.

That said that project started yesterday. If the deadspin-pocalypse claims Oppo there will be a blackout period.

That, too. It’s one of the biggest catastrophes in the mass-resignation today. Deadspin was a gem for having different voices than your usual dry (or worse: misogynistic or worse) sports bros weigh in on important subjects. The diverse staff covered important issues with the clarity and nuance they deserved, often from angles that went uncovered by other outlets, but made a huge impact because of that.

M ost of all, they gave my motorsport and car coverage a shot, day in and day out, not just with cross-network shares over from Jalopnik, but with actual genuine support . Tim Burke is a gottdang saint for helping me with screencaps and video bits when the Internet didn’t come through with a copy, or when I couldn’t catch something in time on the main (read: advertisement-heavy) U.S. feeds. Diana Moskovitz in particular couldn’t have been more supportive in researching longform projects. She and Tim Marchman both helped me learn new research systems and dig deeper into big stories.

I cannot think of a more talented group of sporpswriters on the internet, or a more supportive, genuine bunch of individuals. I’m so angry and sad right now. The worst people always seem to win.

I don’t expect the old dorks who run the network to care about hiring a diverse staff if they do continue with Deadspin, given their history of installing old white dudes they’re buds with in positions of power without an open job search, and over talented candidates who were largely doing those jobs well when they took over. Ugh. This is really the darkest timeline.

I hope all of these folks can find work in other areas, publicly supporting someone fired for insubordination and quitting is a sure way not to get interviews. Maybe some of them can make it work on their own but most won’t work in the field again
