As you can see in my very accurate diagram, the parking brake cable splits into two at one point. When I disengaged it a few days ago, only the left rear cable went back to its original position. The right rear one is still sticking out, leaving the brake engaged on that wheel , and it will not go back no matter what I do. Any suggestions that don’t involve replacing the cables entirely? The truck is an automatic, so I don’t *need* the parking brake at all.... if I just remove the cable and leave it off, will that affect the regular brakes somehow?

Not true. Putting the trans in park drops a pawl into a gear which keeps the vehicle in place, but pawls can fail and you should still set the parking brake on an incline.

Those cables for the parking brake go through lots of channeling and a few pivot points, it’s likely they’ve seized up. I’d trace the cables and apply your favorite flavor of penetrating lubricant to them, while trying to work the cable back and forth.

Fix it properly, is never the wrong anwser for something you like and intend to keep.

If it is a POS, destined for the scrapyard sooner than later, you can disconnect it and it wont have any effect on your regular brakes.

Most likely dirt/gunk in the cable end.

I forget where you live, but if it’s below freezing and the “boot” at the end of the cable at the caliper accumulates water in it, it can freeze the cable in place. MR2's are known for this issue and are set up just like your diagram.

I would fix it properly, but I’m speaking as an adult. As a teen I drove a Toyota 4x4 for 12 years with seized ebrake cables..

I would be more worried about the right brake being stuck on..

It spins, but there's definite resistance. The brake is definitely stuck in place, but I still think it's due to the cable being jammed somewhere.

Yeah, I’m just unemployed at the moment and working with a budget of like $3/ day . I eat a single Pop-Tart for breakfast and have $1 microwave pasta for lunch and dinner. Fixing it correctly isn't an option until I have a job again.

Disconnect the cable at the brake end then.

Everything will still be there for you to fix when you have money.

I think you can disconnect it at the brake end and assuming this is a drum brake there should be a lever that the cable attaches too, you can manually push that back in place to release the shoes.

Been there, bag of rice and frozen veggies for a weeks worth of meals..

Unhook the lever behind the wheel and make sure the brake is off. I’ve also cooked brakes by driving around with it stuck on..
