The instructions. They say I need special tools. Expensive tools that happen to be sold by the same company that wrote the instructions. But do I need them, really?

Lately I’ve just been making my own tools. For example, Volvo uses a 19mm square interface for their belt tensioner. I took a 5/8" carriage bolt, ground the head square , threaded on a nut, and then chopped off the excess length. The square bolt head goes in the socket on the tensioner and I can put a wrench on the nut. Cost me $3 to make.
I may end up replacing the rear toe links on the Volvo - there’s a $120 Volvo tool to press them out, I think I figured out how to make it with a piece of square tube stock and a few bolts for probably <$20.

Ooh, that solution for the square tensioner is slick. Will have to keep that in mind if ever a similar situation comes up.

It was one of my finer moments, though I didnt include in my $3 the $30 in gas and 3 hours running around to different stores . See, I consulted a forum and guy in there made a really similar tool using a 7/16 square nut. Every place I went to, even Fastenall, did not have 7/16 square nuts. I got desperate in Lowes, but in my darkest hour, inspiration struck.

So you didn’t worry about the pre load torque for the crush sleeve on the pinion gear shaft? Or is that not a worry for your particular rear diff?
