Do any of you web types have any guess on how much bandwidth Oppo uses per month? I’m a dumb-dumb when it comes to computers and the internet and stuff so I couldn’t even begin to venture a guess.

Not a ton. My guess would be somewhere around 50GB-250GB/mo. Gifs are probably the top source of bandwidth. If there was a tool life GIPHY integrated, it would be on the lower end.

Something like a vBulletin wouldn’t be that expensive. Honestly, at only a couple hundred bucks a year (for a low to mid  tier package) , I’d foot the bill for us to all have a place to keep this shitshow going.

Hell I'd chip in on that.  I got no clue on how to set something up like that anyhow.

I think we could start up a GoFundMe page for something like this.

There was some discussion on the Oppo discord last night about it. I think it would be cool if we could move to something like Discord, especially since it’s free, but as far as I know it’s strictly app based, and the interface is a little clunky. It may also exclude some users, a web based interface would be more inclusive for everyone involved. And vBulletin, which can also be clunky, is at least a format EVERYONE who has ever used the internet for more than 7 minutes is familiar with. That said, I kind of like the blog-format of Kinja because it keeps content fresh whereas on a thread I’d worry that noobs would just constantly dig up zombie threads.

As far as setting up, I think you just hand vBulletin money, tell them the name you want, and you’re off to the races. Though I think there’s probably some concern over who actually has the legal rights to the Oppo name, logo, etc.

Absolutely, that would be an option to cover costs if it gets outrageous. But a 75 GB/month vBulletin is only like $36 0/year if you pay up front.

There may be some other options. Tbh I’ve become a fan of the Kinja blog format (just not Kinja itself). I like how it keeps fresh content rolling in, where as my fear with a vBulletin would be people just constantly digging up zombie threads, and good stuff getting lost in the noise. There’s probably other platforms out there that are better, I just don’t know because, like I said, I’m a dumb dumb.

See, Discord doesn’t bother me, but it feels more chat room than blog/bulletin board. I really have a hard time following  Reddit’s comment format.

I honestly like the idea of a vBulletin format more than good ole Oppo, but that has mostly to do with my disliking of some of the content being posted on here.

At least you could keep things sorted with a vBulletin format (subforums for whatever topics you like/need).

One of the things I really like about this format, though, is that I get to see everything everyone posts. I see the title, author, and a little preview. If I don’t like it, or don’t think I like it, I don’t click. If it pisses me off, I don’t comment on it unless I feel I have something to add to the discussion, and then I go back to the main Oppo page and look at other things.

I feel like the vBulletin format and endless sorting would result in me (and I’m sure many) sticking to 1 or 2 sub-forums and missing a lot of other content. Part of the fun for me here is every time I load/refresh the page I have no idea what I’m going to get. But I’ve certainly read about and leared a lot of things on here that I would have otherwise missed. If I just wanted car facts or discussions, or info on basically any topic , I could just go to any other vBulletin board.

Plus I like seeing things that I dislike sometimes, it keeps my mind open, forces me to examine my beliefs, and keeps me humble. That said, I think that works for me on Oppo because we’re a great community and tend to respect one another for the most part, so the amount of stuff I dislike or disagree with is pretty low, and when I do things are kept pretty civil. When I really need to be infuriated   I go read the main page.
