That is fucked up. G/O really seems intent on wrecking this place. It is really sad to see Gawker sites go out like this.

I know things have been hard before, but this seems pretty close to a death knell for the group.

Not sticking to sports was their only attraction. One bland useless ESPN in the world is enough. Sports and athletes themselves don’t stick to sports. I suspect some undertaxed overpaid G/O suit got upset about the coverage of Orange at the Nats game. It’s almost like they don’t know what drives traffic .

I do sort of wonder if they realized what they were buying... Maybe a site like Deadspin can’t be profitable without huge change, but if you are just going to alienate your readers and your writers, why buy the site in the first place, just set up your own “stick to sports” blog.

I think it’s the opposite of acting like children. They report on other media companies on the regular, like espn. It would be hypocritical and childish if they didn’t do the same of their own organization. Espn used to have a public ombudsman for that exact purpose.

Deadspin did this when Denton ran it, and when Univision ran it. Why the fuck would the current owners be surprised by this? What did they expect?

Hot take: Deadspin should stick to sports. But let the writers write about whatever they want, as long as it gets published to the most appropriate blog, so that they can more effectively reach their target audience.

That Tim Hortons post probably could have gone on The Takeout, the Rectum one could have gone to Vitals, etc. Just get whomever runs each of those blogs to grant the writer authorship, even if that authorship is only temporary. When I wrote that one post for Jalopnik, all Patrick had to do was click a button, inviting me to be an author. I was super-stoked to screenshot this:

Why bother indeed. I t kinda depends on what you want in your web site experience. Only here’s the thing: the GMG universe has plenty of sites to choose from that are basically people of like mind sitting around talking trash with a vague overarching theme to provide subject matter and nominal justification for existence.

So what do they bring to the table then? Maybe their overlords are deciding that an actual sports site might bring more clicks from the greater online universe than a bunch of nominally sober arm chair quarterbacks ejaculating their world view all over the ether as the mood takes them.

There were few, if any sites like deadspin, for better or worse, and it had a dedicated readership base. That base is likely gone, and there are many other well trafficked  sites for sports news. Espn, Yahoo, etc. So what does it now bring to convince me to check there, instead of espn? Not much.

Quite right. The way I see their direction, they were attracting two main audiences: those who are of like socio -political mindset and those who aren’t but like to be outraged. Throw in a few who have no stance but like to read outrageous stuff instead of doing work, and that’s your reader base. It must have not been big enough to make a financial case.

So what do you do? ESPN made sports casting success with Sports Center because they offered something more than you could get from the box scores in your local paper at the time . Deadspin would have to find a way to bring added value to their medium beyond their reader base. Maybe that starts with actual ly talking about sports more often. For instance, I once read an article there about how the regulation olympic swimming pool changes length due to the physics of temperature and how that influences how many digits FINA uses for official times. That was new; I’d never seen it elsewhere. I clicked and stayed to read.

But if I’m some potential reader surfing sports sites on my lunch break, and I come across Vigo the Carpathian or rectums, I’m moving on and likely won’t be back. Maybe that’s the way their bosses see it.

Question is, can the Deadspin staff pivot, or will they all be sacked?

Oh come on now, you can’t handwave this as “reporting”. They gleefully complain about any management decisions they disagree with, but when members of the writing/editorial team cross the line, it’s radio silence from the rest of them, or they hide behind “it’s just a blog” (still waiting on the Greg Howard story) .

And, frankly, it doesn’t matter what they expect. They own the damn business. They get to make the decisions what they want published on their sites. As I recall, the writing team not listening to the executive staff in the past got Gawker killed, and multiple editors have left- maybe they should take a hint at some point.

Yeah, the whole BFIB BS is pretty stupid. I thought it was funny at first too. Then it got super popular and Deadspin realized they struck gold and really started playing it up beyond what I think they probably honestly felt. The comments got super toxic and it wasn’t a very pleasant experience to engage anymore.

Then it got driven into the ground and played out. Oh look, the 9, 001st reference to “the right way”. Yuk yuk. Just as funny as the previous 9,000 references were, I say!

And all the while, Deadspin was  preaching inclusion from one side of their mouth, and engaging in othering from the other side. It was hypocrisy.

The Hogan thing was stupid all around. They believed they were in the right because he was a public figure. Then when the judge told them to take it down they decided they wanted to become a cool martyr for Freedom of the Press. I remember people talking about how awful the Gawker v Hogan case was going to be for journalism. Kinja'd!!!2

The fact that a LGBTQ person’s identity is an “open secret” in a local or regional area doesn’t give a publication a green light to publicly blast their identity out on a national scale. After all, an open secret is still technically a secret.

It wasn’t cool with Thiel, it wasn’t cool with Jenner, it wasn’t cool when people outed me. I firmly believe that the only person who should be allowed to out a LGBTQ person to others is the person themselves. It doesn’t matter how many people in the local area already know.

Some people have approached me over the years wanting to write about me and/ or my adventures. Each and every one of them politely asked if talking about me being trans was cool. That’s how it should be done.

Kinja'd!!! ADabOfOppo; Gone Plaid (Instructables Can Be Confusable) > Mercedes Streeter
10/29/2019 at 16:39

Kinja'd!!!1

Thiel is a pile of shit and a hypocrite and should have sued them himself.

Reporting on important, influential people is what journalism is about. Everyone in his little bubble already knew about him. That means it wasn’t secret. And when a person has that amount of influence and power they lose some of the privacy that we have for not being important. That is the trade-off.

So we should have asked Weinstein if it was okay to report on the open secret that he was abusing women for years before that news broke?

I get that you’re protective of those in your community. Thiel doesn’t need any protection.  If anything we need to make sure we are protected from him because he obviously has the the means to corrupt justice for his personal gain.

Kinja'd!!! Mercedes Streeter > ADabOfOppo; Gone Plaid (Instructables Can Be Confusable)
10/29/2019 at 17:10

Kinja'd!!!2

First of all, I dislike Thiel and Jenner just as much as anyone else here. Thiel is practically a supervillian and Jenner is a disgrace to trans people. With that said, I don’t throw my beliefs away just because someone is an awful person.

Also, know that my position isn’t defending Thiel, rather criticizing the practice of outing someone just because their identity is an open secret in their personal circle.

Reporting on important, influential people is what journalism is about. Everyone in his little bubble already knew about him. That means it wasn’t secret. And when a person has that amount of influence and power they lose some of the privacy that we have for not being important. That is the trade-off.

Outing an influential person achieves what, exactly? It’s tabloid nonsense at best and can be dangerous at worst if the subject is dealing with depression.

Also, if someone is only out to a “little bubble” that means it’s still a secret to everyone else. Granted, I’ll give you the fact that being influential means you lose privacy. Still, it’s pretty scummy to out someone outside of their own terms, even if they’re evil and powerful.

And it’s not the first time Gawker has done it. Remember that Conde Nast exec? That escort he hired was male. They were literally outing him, too. They did it again when the tabloids were trying to out who was then Bruce Jenner.

So we should have asked Weinstein if it was okay to report on the open secret that he was abusing women for years before that news broke?

Oof. Not gonna lie, that one made me wince. That’s a false equivalence if I’ve ever seen one.

Outing a powerful gay man is not the same thing as reporting on a powerful sexual predator. One is a crime...the other is just being gay.

I get that you’re protective of those in your community. Thiel doesn’t need any protection. If anything we need to make sure we are protected from him because he obviously has the the means to corrupt justice for his personal gain.

I’m not saying he does need protection and I’d agree that it’s scary that he can just bend justice towards his will.

All I’m saying is that it’s not the media’s job to out someone outside of their terms, regardless of how powerful or famous they are. Cishet people need to know that outing people is NOT okay.

Sure, this could happen, and in theory, it makes some sense. In practice, however, cross-network sharing is a significant driver of traffic to other websites in the network.

It’s in the network’s best interest to have subjects of interest to multiple sites covered by multiple blogs. You click on a Deadspin mac-and-cheese post shared to Gizmodo while you’re reading Giz, then you see something else Deadspin’s written that’s interesting, and then you waste more time there instead of getting any work done. Some of my best performing posts have been those that were cross-posted to other network sites.

The data backs this up, as some of Deadspin’s most successful posts have been non-sports blogs that tend to be cross-posted across the network :

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I also trust a ten-year employee who’s stuck with Deadspin through ALL the BS it’s endured lately and who no doubt looks at these numbers to guide the site’s content to know the site’s audience better than someone who thinks dry sports content sans the wider sociopolitical context and other fun stuff of interest to sports fans is what Deadspin’s readers want.

Deadspin has had a mix of sports and cultural commentary for as long as I’ve read it, and changing that is a fundamental change in the website’s character that makes it like too many other existing sites out there. That mix has been pretty successful over the years, and changing it would kneecap the site’s success even more than the damn autoplay videos everyone hates.

You and do gisbadbo are correct of course. This is what I shared with him/her:

“Not disputing that. Just ignoring the obvious because it will always come up.

As it should."

Good to know about the archive, thanks. My goal is to one day have all this on my own site, so I need the text and images downloaded and organized. I’m copying the text to Word, and downloading the images for each post separately. It’s very time consuming, but I’m not sure if there’s a better way to have complete control over the content in the future.

Crossposting is still kind of an obnoxious form of advertising off-topic posts from other blogs. Yes people love Beyoncé , but it’s still kinda wrong to play her music on an oldies radio station (yet). Yes people love Star Wars, but those movies shouldn’t be aired on the History Channel just because they’re “popular”. In the same way, I think it’s important to be very selective about what gets featured among the station/channel/blog’s main content . It’s fine to advertise other channels/stations during an ad break, and likewise I don’t have a problem with the “you may also like” ads inviting readers to check out the other blogs. I think you can trust readers to click on stories that they will find interesting via those thumbnails.

There are still plenty of completely justifiable ways to share posts between blogs though. There are so many things to write about that can easily fall into more than one category, like autonomous vehicles, which belong on Gizmodo just as much as they belong on Jalopnik. Or sports movies, which have a place on Deadspin just as much as they have a place on The A.V. Club.

...did you just compare being LGBTQ to sexual assault?

I mean, you may not personally like the share-a-palooza that goes on, but the numbers say that there’s plenty of others who are fine with it, or even........click on it . Don’t like what’s shared? Skip it. Pretty simple, that.

Besides, sports with a side of more general commentary is what Deadspin’s always done. It’s why people go there, particularly those who don’t even follow sports. Adequate Man is one of the few remaining sub-blogs because it was so damn successful. Deadspin doing the same dry “just the sports” coverage other sites do isn’t what the writers there signed up for, for sure.

Let’s be honest, too—part of why it makes sense to keep that coverage of non-sports things on Deadspin is because the writers build their audience there. In a perfect world, everyone would check every page, but I’ve seen how tribalistic y’all get about different sites and their individual site cultures. People go to Deadspin for Deadspin’s writers and commenters, just like Jalopnik fans go to read those writers’ and commenters’ takes. (Don’t act like various Oppo users don’t snip on Jez all the time, either.)

So, the current (rather successful!) way it’s set up makes sense if you realize that it’s divided up by staff/writing style /site culture more that it is rigidly by topic. The latter would certainly decrease shares across the network as there’d be fewer blogs that overlap , and thus, it’d decrease views.

M anagement needs to trust that it purchased a site run by competent people in editorial who know their audience, and it needs to allow those people to keep making competent decisions about their sites’ direction.

(Also, have you seen modern-day TV channels? It’s a dying medium, so that already makes it a bad comparison, but like, SyFy expanded to weird reality TV a long time ago, and BBC America now shows reruns of crap we already got here. I wish THEY knew their audience better because I’m really there on BBCA for reruns of old Top Gear. That may just be me, too, though. )

No.

It was a poorly chosen comparison.

Yeah the dilution of cable channels that you used to be able to trust to consistently deliver on a given theme is annoying. I really miss being able to tune in to, say, Discovery at any time to get some science.

At any rate, I’m not here to defend ol’ Fartsmeller. When he said “stick to sports”, he was really just trying to shut people up and that’s not cool. But in the process, he did remind me of one of my pet peeves, so while I may agree with what he literally said in that tweet, I am very much against the spirit in which it was written.

Ha, fair enough.

He is 100% forever Jim Fartsmeller now, though. “Spamfeller” was good, too, but “Fartsmeller” makes me laugh more, and frankly, I could use a laugh as I rush to PDF my work here  just in case.
