Things I think would be cool to do: overlanding

Things I do not have the money or time for: overlanding.

To be frank, though, every time I look at a 4Runner or Tacoma, I think of what could be. But the cost of the machine considering I don’t need one, the cost of accessories, locating spots to go, getting time off for it, I remember that it’s not something feasible.

Have you watched Long Way Round?  It’s on Prime. Similar idea, but slightly different.

One of the things I’ve come to realize in the last year or two is that I can’t do everything. I’ve got 1000 interests but really have to focus my time and energy into a maximum of maybe 5. Overlanding is very high on that list but just outside the cutoff line for the reasons you mentioned above.

Kinja'd!!!

This was my ideal setup, except I want a stepside and a dirtbike on the back.

It’s pretty good. Ewan McGregor and one of his buddies. There is also Long Way Down where they ride from the north tip of the UK to the south tip of Africa. Basically entertaining stuff.

My younger self had no idea of the true value of time, so I say kill as many birds with as few stones as possible. One upside of this new mentality is that I enjoy lifes little things a lot more.

Its gotten to a point where I only turn on my ps4 once a month to update it and check what free games are up.

Overlanding is just car camping. You can get most of the crap you need to go car camping for a weekend for ~$100 from Walmart. Find a state park that’s not far away, and you can make a weekend trip for ~$150 all in that feels like you’re in another country.

That’s basically one night in a decent hotel room. Affordability isn’t the problem!

You don’t need 35" tires to drive down a gravel road in a state park past campsites that people take RVs down. You also don’t need that much storage space for a tent and some sleeping bags.

Tiny tires aren’t good on the grids (I live in a rural area, close to a provincial park, but it’s a 45 minute detour if I avoid the grids with my car).

I like the “filed to”. And that picture awakens a mighty want.

I’ve coincidentally been browsing autotrader and Craigslist for appropriate vehicles and think a mild overland build would be capable for a reasonable price if you went a bit bigger than most and got like a Tahoe or something. It’s body on frame, 4wd, there’s tons of aftermarket things out there, and unlike a fucking 4Runner they actually depreciate to reasonable prices. Sure you won’t get the agility or quite the range of options for where you can reasonably get to you would in a 4runner or the like, but a lift kit, some good tires and I bet I could get a Tahoe most of the places I felt like going.

Kinja'd!!!1

As someone who has driven a Tahoe in plenty of inadequate situations, it’s not the worst choice, although pricey depending on the year and mileage . It’s pretty reliable, the 4x4 is pretty good, but I’d recommend better tires and removing the air dam (which will remove itself anyway).

I desperately want a Cayenne for towing, and to slowly mod for off-roadin’. At this point, I should put that in all of my cover letters for jobs. “Hello. My name is Stef Schrader, and I promise to blow a chunk of my salary on a gently used Cayenne to beat the poop out of.” Maybe that would work, because nothing else does. Nothing matters anyway, I guess.

tl;dr—I really want a Cayenne, man

What if you could rent that 4Runner once or twice a year for really fun adventures, would that be appealing?

Sorry if this isn’t allowed. First time posting and I  have no idea about this site or community. It just popped up in my google feed presumably because of the word “overlanding.”

Seems like an interesting idea, depending on where you’re based out of. Although you could possibly run into issues of people unfamiliar with trails getting stuck, insurance problems, cost of rigs, et cetera. I’d be interested in it, but unlikely to do it as a holiday.

All very good points. Some I’m still navigating and others will rear their ugly heads soon enough. But yeah, I really think there are some folks like yourself who would enjoy a properly outfitted rig to take for a trip (be it 3-10 days). I’m based in Salt Lake City, Utah. It’s a great HQ for exploring Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon and all of Utah in between.

I’ve gone all in on two 4runners; Rovrr and Rovrr 1: The Grey.

What types of things (fixtures and gear)  would you expect to have on an Overlander?

People said with the 4th gen “the V8 is stupid, it has less power than the V6!” Which, to be fair, was true.  But man what a difference WHERE that power was makes.  The V6 is a good motor, but its hauling a lot of truck.  That being said, anyone who wants to complain about lack of power or speed in their 4runner is welcome to try my Land Cruiser for a day.

Admittedly, we’re talking about climbing a 6-7% grade at 60mph. I’d say a different transmission would make a heck of a difference versus the 5 spd.

I would love the V8 in the 4Runner. It’s too bad it’s exclusive to the GX. I never drove a GX460 (or 470 for that matter) but probably should have.

Those grades are a familiar to me for sure, and even the GX works pretty hard with the camper in tow on them, but the cruiser is about as fast without a camper as the GX is with one.

It’s a buzzword label. But I do think it will be helpful to have a category that helps separate it from terms like Off-roading, 4 wheeling, car camping, etc. Here in Utah the moment off-roading or wheeling are mentioned it evokes Jeep rock crawler almost immediately. This just isn’t the right expectation. Car camping isn’t a good fit either as low clearance vehicles cannot go down some of these trails and fire roads to reach BLM land for dispersed camping (wild/primitive/no facilities or running water). It’s camping for some, it’s cruising and exploring for others. So I do think it needs a general name of sorts simply to convey the right expectation.

I hear ya. I myself am trying to find a balance of words to convey the proper message along with images of adventure.

Recently I had exchanged goods for photography work that will end up on Instagram but I was clear in trying to get my point across. I want the images to look “obtainable”. Meaning I want to share some of these real  experiences with others who are interested but at the same time find a balance of (still figuring it out).

A few years ago I was told about a small town that has an awesome water hike and it was beautiful. I researched it and came across this blog article by a local who rubbed me wrong (initially) about how the traffic and parking were too much etc and how Instagram made it popular and took away from the locals. Then I went and experienced it myself and I can definitely see where they were coming from. Still don’t know what the answer to that is. Balance is tricky.
