I definitely admire the folks that are willing to put in the time to save a dog like this. We have one “rescue” (not really, but a stray my sister-in-law took in and couldn’t keep in her yard - he’s a bit of a roamer...), one from a litter from my brother’s sweet golden, and one purebred from a reputable local breeder (a Brittany). My long walks with them are one of the best parts of my day. And the cuddles are good, too.

I’m a little biased, because my dog is part Anatolian... But I fucking LOVE Anatolians .

Thank you for posting this. I do not have the time, skill, nor patience for pets. Buy I admire those who can make something like that article happen.
Such a good dog. I am glad Wes found her.

I’d argue that good owners made the best pets, and often those are the ones who are willing to rescue. =)
Just like people, some dogs are just
so broken that there may be no coming back, even in the hands of the most caring & skillful caregiver..
. And in the hands of an abusive or neglectful guardian, even the most perfect puppy or child can turn eventually
into a monster.

Hot Take:
Wes represents the best ideals of masculinity; at least as far as I am aware of- I do not follow him on any social media. But from what I have read him post on the FP and this story, the way he talks about his relationship with his fiance, how he talks about caring for his dogs - all of it strikes me as coming from a ‘servant leadership’ attitude. Rather than the toxic, bombastic, ego-driven, asshole than men are taught they should emulate, I wish more men thought and acted like what I read from Wes.
Being kind is not weakness. It actually shows great strength of character.

I only know him
from what I’ve read, but he does seem like a legitimately great guy. I’m glad he has a platform where I get to read his stuff regularly.
He’s an unapologetic hunter and carnivore, and some will take issue with that, but as an outdoorsman,
his rationale is hard to argue with (conservation, not preservation, and eating meat taken ethically & responsibly
from the wild, instead of from factory farm situations
).

As a medically diet-limited mostly carnivore myself, I can get behind that ideal. I do not have the luxury of being able to eat a majority plant-based diet, so I would welcome the ability to have meat come from a more ethical source.

I wonder if there are marketplaces (local or online) for hunters to sell excess venison, etc. It may not actually be legal to do so, but I know plenty of hunters who donate meat to homeless shelters and other charities.

Not sure. I also have no idea if I can eat venison. But I should be trying to buy meat from a locally-sourced butcher rather than the grocers. My diet is already eye-wateringly expensive, so I sadly fear that will be a stretch too far.

Can’t have soy. Like at all.
Not really. Can’t have dairy, so without cheese, eggs are just meh. And I am not much a fan of them alone. Quiche is amazing, but I can’t find anything clean for me that would allow me to eat it anymore.
I also cannot have beans. Or greens. Or vegetables, aside from a few root veggies. No fruit.
So lean mean, rice, and white potatoes is about all I eat. It’s loads of fun...

Damn.
I wouldn’t completely give up on eggs, though. I’d
find yourself a good quiche/frittata
recipe you can make at home with diced steak, onions and garlic, with a side of crispy home fries.

No gluten, so quiche is almost impossible. Can’t have onions or garlic either.
But I might try something like you suggest within the boundaries of my diet.

Mushrooms?

Not sure if I can have them, but I do not like them.
My food issues are relatively recent, so I had plenty of time to get used to all these wonderful foods; mushrooms aside. Gross.

Just leave out the milk, you’ll be fine.
I always add a shot of milk to my scrambled eggs, but it’s not critical. Honestly, you may be able to sub just a little water . I think part of adding it is to thin the mixture a touch so that when you whip it before cooking , it aerates the whole thing to make it lighter.
When I mak
e scrambled eggs, I cook them over a fairly low heat so the eggs cook very slowly, and I’m stirring the whole time, just continually scraping the cooked egg from the bottom of the pan. It’s kind of like making a custard, I think. Anyway, it takes a while, but you keep going until the eggs are mostly set up but are still a little moist. Then you get them off the heat and let them sit and rest in the pan
and finish
setting
up. They’re really smooth and
tasty this way, and not dry and rubbery.

Rescues are the best! This also makes me realize how lucky I was with Scout. Despite her fighting wounds and other scars , she shows no non-defensive aggression unless provoked. Even then, she just bristles up and circles us, and that's only a thing at home. Affection has also never been an issue, she's always been a 70lb lap dog.

One of my local Facebook buy/sell/trade groups just posted that they are starting a new cow-pool... which is a take on car-pool, but for fresh beef... basically, “I’m butchering, who’s buying?”
I have no doubt that you could find something similar for big game.

Butting into a random conversation: Strongly suggest eggs with a moderate amount of Italian seasoning, if you can have that. Seriously delicious. Sucks about the dietary restrictions though. I’d also suggest trying a little sous vide to mix things up. Sous vide chicken is a good go to for me and I’ll even eat it unseasoned sometimes. The texture is just... weird... but good weird.

Can’t have garlic or onions. So what seasoning I can have tends to be altogether bland, Italian even more so since garlic is kind of the whole point of Italian cuisine.
Closest I'd get to sous vide is a crock pot and pulled/shredded meat. Weird textured bland chicken just doesn't sound like much fun.

Sorry, by “Italian seasoning” I meant the stuff you buy at the store. No garlic. Thyme, oregano, and probably rosemary. (The bottle of my cheap stuff doesn’t say).
Yeah sous vide is... well it is what it is haha. I like it, your mileage will vary.
