Kinja'd!!!

I didn’t really know what I wanted to do today. I woke up a little fuzzy from the night before and after a nap and a gigantic breakfast, had some time on my hands. As luck would have it, a couple friends texted! Since it was a nice day, Kate wanted to take her XJ out and put some miles on it. She hasn’t been driving it as the AC doesn’t work and Oklahoma summers suck. Rather than hit the local ORV park, we opted instead to seek out some back roads and just putter a bit.

And putter we did.

The roads were boring, but pretty, and while they would have been very slick and muddy earlier in the day, the sun seemed to have baked away all the mud leaving only nice, smooth dirt.

Only real mishap was that I couldn’t get my center diff lock to disengage. I put it in thinking we were going to hit some mud, which we didn’t, so after a few miles of smooth sailing (and a paved section impending) I flipped the linkage to the unlocked position.

And drove like that for miles.

And it STILL wouldn’t drop out.

Drove in reverse for a bit.

Still wouldn’t drop.

Finally, getting desperate, I threw the transfer case into neutral and rolled to a stop.

That worked, thankfully.

I can only assume it got a little bound up due to how firm the road was?

Anyway. Good day. Nice weather. Good views.

Sous vide chuck and roasted veggies for dinner.

I think I’ve earned a beer.

Eh, a few miles isn’t the end of the world. Just don’t want to make it a regular occurrence.

Almost bought a D1, backed out though because the dude started acting kinda shady after I started asking questions about rust. Didn't want to pull the rear carpet up because he did not want to damage it.

Eh, sometimes that happens. All three different 4x4s I’ve owned (Two XJs with two different transfer cases, the Disco, and now my Chevy) sometimes need kick into neutral to switch in or out of 4wd.

Agreed. I haven’t had the CDL long so I think I’m just getting used to it.

Hmmm is the rear floor pan a rust prone area on those? If it isn’t, I’d also get weird about a rando pulling up my carpet (heyo?). I think the major bad spots on those are frame and suspension, but that is only a guess from seeing the horror stories from the UK.  Seems like those things are like 90% rust over there.

The family and I are possibly taking the Land Cruiser out to the Talimena Scenic Byway this weekend. Supposed to be really pretty this time of year.

It is super pretty this time of year, but be warned there will be A LOT of people.  The Saab club did their drive around this time last year and I spent most of the drive in 1st or 2nd.  That said, there are quite a great overland trails around there if you’re feeling up to it.

I think all CDL’s play up at some stage. my Cruiser locked in once when I mistakenly hit it on bitumen . Cutting the power eventually worked.

We didn’t end up going this last weekend, ended up doing stuff with friends and around the house. Some over-landing a light off road stuff would be really nice. I’ll have to post on Oklahoma Overland or ONTorc and see what people suggest.
