Surprisingly little for the trumpets to do in this score. At least I’m sitting where I can see the screen. I saw this when it came out in ‘77, and it still holds up.

What a fantastic movie to hear played live! To have seen it new must have been an event.

That Rach has some nasty trumpet parts, if my memory serves.

I have picked up my trumpet in years. I recently tried playing Fan fare for the Common Man and my lips lit on fire

In general, how is John Williams to play?
I’m still blown away that he worked on the Peter Gunn theme. Even with all the iconic music that he has been a part of.

Williams is a mixed bag. At least for trumpets, some of it can be fiendishly difficult and virtuosic, like a lot of Harry Potter or Star Wars, while others can be super simple, like Close Encounters. The thing is, he is such a great writer, and knows the instruments so well, that even his most difficult music is playable—if you practice it. Great writers create music that is hard yet playable, while average composers write music that is hard and unplayable. For most of Williams’ concert music, like arrangements of movie scores or the stuff he’s written for the Olympics or TV, the greatest challenge is endurance. When you play the movie, there is plenty of time to rest between cues. When you play a concert medley, like one for Raiders or Superman, it’s like pounding on your face with a brick. Ultimately, it’s all a joy to play because it’s all just so damned good.

Yes. Played by Melinda Dillon, who also played the mother in A Christmas Story.

That wouldn’t be my first choice of something to play if I hadn’t played in years. It’s a bitch even when you’re in shape. If you haven’t heard it, listen to Copland’s third symphony. The fanfare forms the basis of the final movement. My favorite part is actually the beginning of the last movement when the fanfare is played by the woodwinds. Fantastic scoring.

O yes, I wasn’t even close to hitting the high notes. I played a little bit of the Jur rasic park song.
