Let me get this straight:
1) he pulls his plate to avoid detection?

I learned my lesson standing in a tire shop watching the owner, manager, and tech grin from ear to ear while a customer roasted donuts in his new tires outside. They all had a good laugh and t hen looked up retail price of his replacements..
