9000 miles on the odometer and just over a year off the lot, there appears to be RUST under the paint on my hood. Now, some of you colder region dwellers may think cars come from the factory like this, but I assure you, they don’t.

For a such a new PNW car that is detailed/washed often to have rust under the paint is fucked. I will have to look into the warranty re: paint.

Yes, I know it is small. But there is no rock chip or other paint disturbance that I could see. Also, there ARE rock chips other places on the hood that are fine.

Temptation to get rid of this...growing.

That looks more like metallic fallout than  rust under the paint. If the rust was under the paint it should bubble first. Try Autoglym Magma From Canadian tire, see if it reacts with it.

I tried a few things, but I am 90% sure it is rust man.  Hard for the phone to focus on the bright sunny paint.

Funny that it didn’t happen to the Ford first. But that’s shitty.

What have you tried? Fallout removers like magma will react right away with that if it’s on the surface. You could try a heavy clay as well, but liquid fallout removers are more gentle on the clear coat.

Looks like paint contaminate - metal bits get in/on the paint and rust and it looks terrible. Paint correction/clay bar should take it off.

If there is no chip there then it’s doubtful that it’s just rusting through.

I tried a bit of clay. I'll hit it with fallout remover later

I bought a new (to me) vehicle today. It is considerably rustier:

Have to decide if it’s worth my time to take it apart so I can try to clean up that rust on the boom. Not really sure how to paint it, but I’m sure there’s advice about painting steel bikes online, though I’m worried any painting I did would just immediately get scraped off the second I slipped the boom back in.

That is concerning for a new car. I’ve always been curious about depreciation on cheap cars like these because of how close the purchase price can be to the 5-7000$ range where I think they would be cross shopped with much older crappier cars
