A sad week in California family farming

I have represented this family for over a decade, and saw the transition from father to son.  One of the myriad reasons that almonds are more attractive than dairy is that it requires almost no employees.  The dairy employees will lose not only their jobs, but the housing on the ranch. Thanks to our wonderful Democrat one-party system in California, dairy is dying and this is the only business decision that makes sense.  Dino is a really nice person, and a good businessman.  He has small children, and this change will secure their future. This kind of thing makes me sad.

Sad day. Thankfully we were able to find employment for all of our employees when our family shop closed up. I live in a Republican dominated region and they don’t give a shit about small business either.

For us hustlers who don’t want to sell our souls to corporate America, there’s no refuge within the political realm. It’s up to us to take care of each other.

This is a shame! Are all the CA dairy farms going to go this way?

But they can milk the almonds now, not a total lost.

I don’t understand how someone (not Immoral specifically, just anyone) can be Right leaning, but still support agriculture in spite of the fact it’s not profitable without government subsidies. I understand there is the argument to be made that certain things, like agriculture, are important enough to warrant subsidies, but I still don’t really get it. Not trying to argue either or poke holes in anything. I’m just genuinely curious what you think.

All that aside I hope the family at least can find some peace and maybe rest now that they are done with the business, even if it wasn’t on their terms.

Family dairying and, for that matter, family farming in general is on the decline over here too. The efficiency gains required to make an effective return on intensive agriculture pretty much dictate the get big or get out mentality. Small farm operations do thrive in areas where they can sell or value add locally but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Even our ‘local’ family dairy ( in that it provides locally grown and branded milk) is an hour and a half down the road, operates on over 2,500 acres, has over a thousand head of dairy cows, also supplies contract milk to a big processor and is majority owned by a hedge fund. And it’s pretty much the only dairy left in this part of the state.

Many of the farms around here are remotely managed by owners in our cities who engage local contractors and suppliers as  required...

E ventually you’ll end up with lots of really serious talking heads on TV expressing concern over the high cost of dairy in California and saying that all those farmers are to blame for not staying in the business.
