Let’s get creative on this

The leading candidate for Neil- responsible- car has been a BMW X1. It’s a high riding , 3 series based, hatchback. Good space, decently fun, good gas mileage.

And i like the look and ride height of the sport package; and prefer the sport seats. But finding a car with the sport package is nigh impossible. Especially on the 28i, which is more in my price range and quite frankly I’d appreciate the fuel economy.

Well; there are a pair of sport E90 seats available locally for a bargain ; and there are a bucket load of aftermarket suspension options.

Accepting that I will just get creative to make the car mine opens up my options. And I sent off a message to a person with a Orange X1 this morning that’s in my price range. This isn’t it but this is a lowered(too much) orange x1 :

I agree that sticking with the smaller engine is a good mix of balance (lighter) and less hassle on the maintenance side. Are you flexible on color? T ry scouring Autotempest, you should be able to find some fully loaded cars (plenty of those types of owners).

Alternatively you could look for an E91 wagon (2012) or F31 diesel wagon.

Just a heads up that four bangers have been known to eat timing chain guides. I have almost 130k miles kn one with no issues, but it is a thing.

I thought that the 2014s were in the clear.. . But I do have it on my list to keep an ear out for chain noise.

You’ll have to ask TFritsch, he knows more than I about these engines.

I like these, but I'd get a late E91 over one if I had the choice. If not, I'd have no problem driving one; I test drove on back when I was seriously car shopping and I quite liked it.

The E9X wagons are on my radar too (as are A4 wagons) but X1 availability isn’t a bit higher so finding the right one at the right price seems more likely.

I am open to different colors but I know my daughter would be thrilled if I got orange and I like it too so why not? I’ll try autotempest.

The wagon is on my radar but there are more X1s out which makes finding one with the right miles and price; etc easier. But yeah; crossovers as a whole get a lot of grief but the X1 is a good car. Decent steering, decent speed, balanced, practical . Not all too high.

Although; I’m also still considering a 335d and doing a similar seat/wheel/suspension swap. Because there isn’t an M Sport within 509 miles of me.

I really like the x1. It’s a better option to an Outback if you want something that’ll get down a snow covered, or old dirt road. Plus it comes in orange, I love that orange, I’m also a big fan of the stock M sport wheels
