Old Touareg vs. New Ram Rebel up steep, rocky trail. Only one survives.

TFL has been kind of hitting all the right buttons for me in how they do car reviews, in particular with anything off-roady.

You might be surprised at which vehicle breaks and which one makes it and has to play rescue.

Of course, some of you knowing what I own and my affinity for what TFL has already done with their Touareg, you could probably guess why I’m posting this video... I might feel like gloating just a smidge.

Kind of funny that this is the second video Roman has wanted to be a downer on the Touareg (the last one vs. a Wrangler he was a bit of a downer about it, even though both made it through the same trail, it just took a bit more work on the Touareg’s part). This time he even admits he wanted to say something about how superior the ladder frame, rear stick axle Ram is, but in the end, it’s the one that breaks and has to get bailed out by the unibody, 4 wheel independent suspension Touareg...

Ok, I’m officially gloating.

Anyone who thinks its a good idea to take a full size truck down trails has never been offroading.

It’s a giant full size truck that has been modified a bit with an intake, exhaust, lift kit, bigger tires BUT no reinforcements to any of the drivetrain components.

It was also used in earlier “torture” test pulling a heavy trailer in several 100 mile towing loops.

I suspect that part that broke was already weakened to the point it was going to fail, especially for a rough trail it wasn’t designed for.

When towing onroad, wouldn’t it be in 2WD mode, thus there would be no stress on the transfer case or front driveshaft (which is apparently what actually broke, the front driveshaft right where it connects to the transfer case)?

Also, the Touareg weighs damn near as much as the Ram and is “just a weak unibody.” Seriously, those first gen Touaregs are heavy pigs. That V8 as equipped with the air suspension and all is probably right around 5300 lbs curb weight. The V10 TDI version I own tips the scales at 5850(!). Add about 1000 lbs to get the GVWR (6850).

The power’s always going through the transfer case, whether 2wd or 4.  If it’s in 2wd though, yes the front drive shaft should have been unloaded.

Seems like maybe just some extreme bad luck with the Ram? There’s a rock that seems to almost get wedged between the left front and the wheel well, right when he’s applying power and cranking the wheel left. I can see how that would suddenly put extreme grip/stress on that wheel, leading to something snapping.

Reminds me of this Hummer breaking a tie rod:

Correct, it always goes through the transfer case no matter what, but the front shaft would not be driven by the transfer case when towing, unless you’re towing in 4WD for some reason.

The Touareg, on the other hand, never disengages the front or rear. All 4 are always driven at all times. There is no 2WD mode.

But what the Touareg does is besides the point. Towing in 2WD should not weaken the front prop shaft that failed. Of course, they have already done some wheeling with the Ram Rebel and I believe have even made it up that very trail in previous videos. So, it has experienced similar abuse already, but the towing had little to do with that since they were almost certainly towing in only 2WD mode.

Yeah, probably. At the same time, Ram’s marketing department (And Ford’s with the Raptor) market them as special off road edition vehicles... Of course there’s a lot of different kinds of off roading. Hitting some sand dunes, which is a relatively wide open space, is a very different experience from going on crazy, narrow, rocky trails on a mountain. But, they are advertised as off road specials, so here’s TFL putting vehicles through their paces in their version of off roading living in the Rocky Mountains.

I’ve backed off on watching them as much since they switched to extreme click-bait naming schemes.

“You won’t believe what happens!”

“You’ll be surprised ?!?!”

“The results will shock you!”

It annoys me and I’m immediately turned off from watching something that I would probably be interested in watching if it just had a title that reflected what was being shown. ‘Tis a shame since their production quality is generally pretty good.

I love the TFL Truck videos specifically for videos like this. Most off-roading videos are either on highly controlled tracks or on trails I could take my wifes Sienna up.

I dunno, I don’t have much of a problem ignoring titles when I know the content is decent.

They’re just trying to play the clickbait game like most content creators. I can’t fault them for it, they’re just trying to increase the hits like any other creator trying to live off of doing that work would.

Plus, Jalopnik, which begat us oppo, is absolutely clickbait itself... and yet here you are :P

You can kinda figure out what videos will be good and which wont be by the kind of video.  But yes, the clickbait is strong.

front u joint on the driveshaft? interesting. It was a pretty good video though, even if I ha e to do my customary skipping around for the good bits (damn you algorithm that rewards long videos)
