Sometimes I feel like the only person who doesn’t like soft corn tortillas.

I prefer them over flour most of the time.

Especially freshly made from my local mexican grocer.  OMG.  So good.

This is true, but I have a heck of a time convincing Mrs. Saracen of this.

I’m 100% on board with trying them freshly made from my local M exican grocer.

I only like them in enchiladas to be honest. In tacos I prefer soft wheat or hard corn.

I judge the authenticity of taco based of whether or not they double up the corn tortilla. If I learned anything working at a Mexican restaurant, it’s to double the shell on a taco.

Absolutely.

Being in San Diego, they’re almost always doubled up, unless they fry the tortillas first.  And that’s delicious so I’m ok with it.

Not a very good indicator since that’s regional...

Regional where? I’ve seen this done all over the place: Chicago, Detroit, LA, Orlando, Cleveland

I meant regional in Mexico, not Cleveland , although even that was really oversimplifying. It mostly depends on the cook or the filling, so it’s not a remotely useful measure of “authenticity.” I’ve eaten dozens if not hundreds of tacos in lots of different places in Mexico, from street vendors, bars, in friends’ homes, at nice restaurants, etc., and usually get double tortillas only with particularly juicy fillings. For example, I’m not sure I’ve ever gotten double tortillas with the classic Mexico City al pastor taco—maybe once or twice at places that filled them really full? It’s like saying flour tortillas aren’t authentically Mexican...well, they wouldn’t be for (again) tacos al pastor, but they’re perfectly authentic to food from the northern states.

Hm. I learned something today. I’ve always been under the impression that was the standard for corn tortillas.
