it’s great that kinja autoplays videos inserted in blog posts while autoplaying them in the sidebar and also autoplaying them when infishit scroll brings you to the next blog too. it’s like nobody understands what a user experience is.

If you have ublock origin installed, add this in you filters:

jalopnik.com##.gBERJX.bxm4mm-0.instream-native-video—sponsored.instream-native-video—desktop.instream-permalink.instream-native-video

It removes the videos for me.

I’m disappointed that Chrome’s autoplay blocking doesn’t block this sort of thing. I’m more disappointed that comments are broken for me in Chrome right now, though that seems AdBlock related, so it may be partially my fault (works fine on my laptop) .

That sounds like middle school me designing my myspace page. I recall intentionally setting up the HTML coding such that my page would play as many different songs at once while also having all text in flashing neon. It was a perfect mess.

That top 10 friend list was important to have prominently displayed though!

I switched from chrome entirely to Brave as my mobile browser, love it so far although my wife tried it on iOS and it wasn't nearly as nice.

I just made the switch last night but no issues so far. Already blocked ~4300 ads and saved me 3 min on pages loading.

The Firefox option to block autoplay video s didn’t prevent the Kinja sites’ autoplays, but I’ve had okay luck with Adblock Plus’ “block element” option. Click the lil’ stop sign icon in your top bar (add it back temporarily if you’ve hidden it), then hit “block element.”

Kinja'd!!!

You should be able to hover over the box containing the loud-ass autoplay video, click on it when the whole box is highlighted, and hide the stupid thing. It took a couple tries to hide them all (I think the code for the box changes slightly every now and then), but for the most part, it’s made it possible to browse these sites again without my computer sounding like it’s going to spin itself into a small fire. You may have to double-check for any too-broad filters in your filter list as a filter for all jw-player content will inevitably block site videos elsewhere, but that’s really the only risk.

FWIW, Patrick (bravely) volunteered to solicit feedback on this new poor site design feature: https://jalopnik.com/1839292932

Be nice to the staff, though, as this has ruined their workspace, too—and they HAVE to be here.

Ugh, PG got a short novel from me, but I worked on this kind of stuff before Jalopnik and it makes me angry to see the new owners violate every sane, long-established principle of web design. Point being, direct your anger to the invisible higher-ups who made this call and not at the site staff, as this sure as hell ain’t their doing.

(Also, please enter a Panamera in DTM. Bonus points for the Sport Turismo. I wanna see my large wagon son with wild canards and the world’s meatiest fender flares. Thank you.)
