It’s crazy to read these articles about people earning six figures and barely able to make it in some of these places where the cost of living is so high. I really feel bad hearing about families committing to insane mortgages on small houses that cost $1,000,000 because the local market is so screwed up. I’m sure some of them feel trapped (not able to find a job elsewhere, or all their family & friends are there), but damn, sometimes you just have to say “enough is enough”.

Just got it finished, so not yet. We’ll see if I end up wishing I’d done 40' x 40' instead. When it comes to shops, p retty much everyone says “ you’ll wish you’d built bigger”, but this is plenty big for my current needs , and has some future proofing (I doubt if we’ll ever own a big RV, but this would accommodate one ). I also had them put pipes in the concrete if we ever decide to run water and put in a bathroom.

Yeah it’s real crazy. So I’m in Michigan and had a potential job offer down in Georgia. I was like cool, less snow, closer to my family in SC (all my wife’s family is here in MI). They were trying to get me down there for basically what I make now saying cost of living would be lower. The map above says NOPE. My evaluation of the market down there on houses said NOPE. So I had to walk. Pretty awesome job too, shame they couldn’t afford to make me relocate my family.

OK is a bit to flat, open, and empty for me. I’m a big fan of lakes, so I’m probably in the right area anyhow. Tennessee has an interesting price tag on it there though lol.

Very nice! We have a pond, but wish we had a creek (and closer access to mountains...).

Roughly how much of that cost was the land itself? We spent about $100k for 10 acres (once you subtract the value of our home), that that’s actually high for our area (already had a road, water/electric, some fencing).

Very nice that you’re able to work from home. Does that theoretically mean that you could live anywhere?

Kinja'd!!! Mid Engine > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

The Wallace river is four feet from our deck, and it’s a prett y active river so there’s always a mini roar going on, that said we’re sitting up too high to have to ever worry about flooding. I’m not sure what the cottage is worth, it’s 570 sq ft so not much is my guess. I sign the paperwork for my 40' x 60' shop next Wednesday. My current house in Bothell is up for sale and depending on how things go, will sell today. Once that’s all done I’ll be building a custom house on the property, the cottage will become an Air B NB.

I do work from home but several times a week I have to meet up with Amazon and Microsoft on-site, I can pick the times such that I avoid the bulk of the traffic. So yeah, I have to live in the area because cloud computing. I also love it here.

Nice! I honestly think driving them is the best thing you can do. My M3 i s no longer my daily, but I shoot to drive it at least twice a week. Next backroadtrip is a few weeks from now. =)

Be fastidious on maintenance, of course (sometimes doing more than BMW recommends), take it easy the first 5-10 minutes of your drive, and then drive the piss out of it. I make sure to get near redline at least once every drive. It’s not like my car hasn’t had its share of repairs needed in the past 7 years in my care, but she’s running strong and I’m hoping for at least another 3 years (and she may just end up in the stable for the long haul).

You’re comparing steel vs stick. Mine is a pole barn (6 x 6 posts every 10', concrete poured after) . Wood construction, but not the same as a framed house would be (stick - built on top of the slab ). My quote for stick-built was about the same as steel. Really d epends on how you want to use it.
