That’s part of the New York City Human Rights law, and it doesn’t ban those words, it bans discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodation based on a whole bunch of factors. There was guidance released that calling someone an “illegal alien” would constitute discrimination in those circumstances, but it’s not a blanket ban, it only applies in those specific contexts. Guidance here: https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/cchr/downloads/pdf/publications/immigration-guidance.pdf

To be fair, that linked NBC article is kinda crap. From the headline, and most of the article, it seems that NYC banned using the words in any context. Only in the last few paragraphs does it start talking about housing discrimination and it doesn’t really specify that the guidance is specific to housing and other forms of discrimination.

It’s not toxic mas culinity, it’s assholes and people who don’t know how to respect other humans. There is no such thing as toxic masculinity.
Toxic masculinity exists, and arguing against its existence is a form of toxic masculinity.
It’s the people who use words like toxic masculinity that want to outlaw words a la Orwell that are toxic.
Right before I said the GOP response was an example of toxic masculinity, I said banning the use of “bitch” is ridiculous.
I’m a straight up alpha male, holding hard to words like duty, honor, chivalry, strength, all of those are criteria for the basic view of what is toxic, yet I know how to treat people, I’m a good dude to everybody I meet.
An alpha male is someone who seeks to socially dominate others. If you are trying to dominate people then you are not a “good dude” engaging in “ duty, honor, and chivalry.” If you do not seek to socially dominate others, then you are not an alpha male.
Duty, honor, chivalry and strength are not traits, in and of themselves, that are part of the definition of toxic masculinity.
“Toxic masculinity is thus defined by adherence to traditional male gender roles that restrict the kinds of emotions allowable for boys and men to express , including social expectations that men seek to be dominant (the “ alpha male ”) and limit their emotional range primarily to expressions of anger .”
It is ok to believe in the things you believe in as long as believing in them does not come at the expense of expressing emotions, or leads to behaviors that are harmful to others.
Toxic masculinity is a term coined by people who hate men.
I don’t hate men. I am one. Acknowledging that toxic masculinity exists and trying to avoid it is an act of male self-awareness.

You realize that those who protect the weak and defend the defenseless are almost 100% alpha males, right? Firemen, cops, soldiers, etc... There is literally nothing wrong with having a dominant personality if you don’t misuse it. You know who has dominant personalities, alpha-types? Male and female? Astronauts. Olympians. Racecar drivers. Fighter pilots. Fortune 500 CEOs. Presidents. Legislators. People who demand the best from themselves and strive for greatness. Those same people often inspi re greatness in those around them, and serve their communities and fellow man. Again, people want to erase gender roles, make everybody equal, yet I never see the term “toxic femininity” or perhaps “toxic non-gender specific binaryism”... So there’s nothing really beneficial from using the term toxic masculinity. I have plenty of male self-awareness.

Let me see if my take on strength matches up with yours:
1) I am literally strong enough to pick 90% of humans up, over my head, and throw them in a dumpster.
2) I am comfortable with my sexuality, and with that of others, so much so that I used to judge Drag Queen Bingo every Wednesday at the gay bar.
3) I think everybody is entitled to their own version of who they are, what they are and what they think the world looks like.
4) I don’t think anybody has a right to use number 3 to oppress or shame me for MY version.
5) I was a fireman for ten years. I’m a veteran. I serve in several community service organizations. I have issued asskickings to more than one person who was assaulting or committing a crime against another.
6) And my Oppo card is strong as well: My favorite car I ever owned was a 1992 Accord Wagon. I work on my own shit whenever possible. I have built six K5 Blazer rock crawlers. I prefer manual transmissions. I have driven everything from a JDM Skyline (IN Japan, no less) to a 105 foot ladder truck. I can operate heavy machinery.
7) My faith dictates that I love every person, no matter how much or how little they agree with me or my views. Which requires a ton of strength.
So yeah, I’m thinking I’m pretty strong in ways that benefit the worl d around me every day, and I strive to make the world a better place wherever I can on a human interaction level. And I just bench pressed 325 for three clean reps this morning, so I am actually strong by the common definition too.

I was really confused when Shane Gillis got fired from SNL. They said it’s because of an old video in which he used the c-word to refer to Chinese people, and I had no idea why the ethnicity was important when using the word c** t.
Turns out there was another c-word, “ ch**k, ” used as a derogatory term for Chinese people. Is this common knowledge? I’d never heard of it, and the media was discussing it as if it should be the first word that should come to mind when someone says “ c-word.”
Same for the Top Gear bridge in Burma when they used the word “ slope.” Is that really a derogatory term? Is it a regional thing that doesn’t translate across the pond ? Am I just especially ignorant?

You’re fundamentally misunderstanding what being an alpha means, and also fundamentally misunderstanding the idea of toxic masculinity and what those who point it out are trying to accomplish.
Being an alpha is about establishing dominance over others. Being good at something is not being an alpha .
Toxic masculinity is the idea that men, in trying to fit in to traditional gender norms, neglect their emotions, and others’ emotions, to the point that they harm themselves and others.
Pointing out someone’s words or actions as toxic masculinity is not the same as claiming that all male-ness is somehow bad or that there are no differences between genders.
Why do you feel so threatened by this concept?

Bei ng an alpha isn’t necessarily about ESTABLISHING dominance. Most alphas are “dominant” by default due to a combination of any number of factors, such as drive, intelligence, physical size and strength, skill level, etc. That’s how I see it any way, being a bully or an asshole doesn’t make one alpha.
I’m not threatened by the term toxic masculinity, it pisses me off because no matter how you color it otherwise, it is, in my experience, used as a catch-all term used by folks with an ideology that revolves around attacking everything I happen to like. Toxic masculinity is a term used by leftists and loons to marginalize and denigrate people who don’t agree with them on a million issues. Don’t like abortion? Toxic masculinity. Don’t like Obamacare? Toxic masculinity. Lean conservative? Toxic masculinity. Pro 2A? Toxic masculinity. It’s just like calling everybody a racist or a Nazi. Eventually, the weight of the word loses it’s meaning and the actual racists, Nazi’s and douchebag alphas get a pass because nobody believes that shit is legit when you call somebody a Nazi because they are opposed to whatever your pet cause is...
