We are in the cafeteria at the catholic school learning about applying to high schools. My daughter looks over and sees this on the microwave.
Happy Halloween I guess?

Sounds about right for a Catholic high school.

Private schools, yeah. A big thing. And entrance exams and interviews.

If that’s what’s going on in the lunchroom, just imagine what's happening in the locker room.

Good thing she’s bigger and stronger than the rest of them.

Wait. People apply and then pay to be taught about how homosexuality is a sin and how evolution is made up?
That’s weird as hell.

Dude, definitely not pulling your leg. I can’t see giving money to an organization with a track record like that of the Catholic Church.

Okay, then you are definitely uninformed about catholic schools and the church in general. A catholic education is heavy on math and science with a moral focus on the call to service and compassion for everyone, of all races and creeds. There are so many school districts where kids wouldn’t have a chance at a good competitive STEM education if not for the catholic schools. Kids educated in catholic grade and high schools routinely go on to thrive at the nation’s most reputable and progressive universities.
The backwards, intolerant agenda you seem to think is there would be more consistent with the catholic church of centuries ago , or perhaps of some more fundamentalist protestant christian persuasions of many decades ago.

I don’t remember there being a statute of limitations on protecting pedophiles as a matter of policy. But if you are comfortable with that as an orga nizational mandate, more power to you. Personally, I am against it for a multitude of reasons.
Churches don’t pay property taxes on their land or buildings, they don’t pay sales taxes. When they sell stuff at a profit, they don’t pay capital gains tax. If they spend less than they take in, they don’t pay corporate income taxes. Priests, ministers, rabbis and the like get “parsonage exemptions” that let them deduct mortgage payments, rent and other living expenses when they’re doing their income taxes. They also are the only group allowed to opt out of Social Security taxes (and benefits). These taxes (and those associated with Catholic Schools) are then effectively subsidized by me, the tax payer to the tune of $80 billion a year. That doesn’t sit right with me.
A tax dodging pedophile-defending, homosexual-hating organization is not something I would choose to support and it bothers me that I have t o through the taxes I pay. Taxes from which the church itself is exempt .

Okay, I can see that your certainty in your anger and convictions aren’t going to be swayed by any facts, so I might as well stop trying.
All I would ask is that you not take my mention of how I choose to raise and educate my child as an opportunity to throw your hatred and derision in my face.
At the very least, if you harbor disgust or anger against me personally for my personal decisions in raising my family, I ask you to please remember the guidelines of this forum and don’t express them to me any further . You don’t have to like me, but you can leave me alone.

I certainly don’t hold any ill will towards you in the slightest, nor did I disparage you . It is none of my business how you raise your children or how you do anything else in your life. I don’t have any disgust towards you or your actions or choices. I would ne ve r speak negatively of your children. I am sure they are wonderful, smart kids who, based on the simple fact that their father is concerned enough about their future to do things like research the positives of a school system that both fosters their (and your) beliefs and affords them the opportunity to be exposed to expanded learning opportunities. You are clearly doing what you think is best for them and that will resonate positively with them as they get older.
That said, I have a different set of beliefs which I feel are more rooted in fact than the Bible and the belief that there is an omnipotent being in the sky. You didn’t make your post in a vacuum, but on a public “car enthusiast” forum. That someone might have an opinion that differs from your own shouldn’t come as a surprise.

I thank you for saying that, because I was feeling attacked. I am fully aware of the views many have of different religious institutions, including my own. I just get tired of people throwing them in my face. I’ve heard it all my adult life (I’ve spent my life in academic circles after all) . I’m more than happy to have honest, good faith discussions about the good and bad sides of human institutions, my church included. I have my eyes open. But, it’s frustrating when people just want to tell me what they know or believe they know. Then it’s just a lecture. And believe me, I’ve had that lecture so many times I can’t count.

Understood. And I apologize for my tone, which I know at times can be irritating at the very least, and full asshole at its worst. I am a father as well and I can certainly appreciate your desire to make sure that your kids have the best opportunities.
Enjoy your evening!
