As I composed this my father called to let me know he’s in the hospital (probably ok for now, getting checked out for heart problems), so my limited enthusiasm is already gone, but since I was here anyway: my fallback for a used manual Jeep is a used manual Toyota and this just popped up.

Looks like a nice truck, about twice what I’m hoping to spend on an XJ but seems almost reasonable given the broad enthusiasm for Toyotas.

And while sitting here after the call and still working on this a young guy hit my rock rails with his car door so I’m done. This spot is cursed.

Update: Highlander reminded me this popped up today as well.

Hope everything is okay with your dad!

Also, avoid that gen 4Runner like the plague. Overall it will have less issues than a Jeep, but the one issue it has is catastrophic, and that is the headgaskets. They will blow, and they aren’t cheap to fix. On top of that, these are dog slow. The manual helps, but these were 13-14 seconds to 60 new. Mine takes around 21 seconds as it sits, and averages 10mpg.

You’ll be surprised at the power that isn’t coming out of that 3.0l V6. Otherwise, looks par for a $4k 30 year old Toyota.

Also, I’m a big guy (6', 275lbs) and fit, but only because I’m used to it. The seating position is really ideal for someone who is 5'5" or less.

That’s a nice looking 4runner.. but $4k includes the popularity tax..

Look for an R50 Pathfinder - 99% the same for 1/4 of the price.

Or this;

or another outlier from Toyota;

Most of the 22R “head gasket” trucks were fixed by Toyota at considerable cost.

If the gasket was properly repaired, it’s less of a worry.

Can’t bring myself to get enthusiastic about anything with an auto. Otherwise I’d be chasing Commanders.

Can’t say I like the silver, but that Willys is pretty cool.

Looks like what the tin man would drive.

Ive driven one of these. You don’t want to. This thing was basically factory fresh and it was terrible. The steering was maybe connected to something and the owner said “floor it or you’re not making it up the hill. ” This was in his neighborhood.

It definitely wasn’t factory fresh. That’s the one thing I’ll give my 4Runner, the steering is well weighted and direct. I need to redo the tie rods and steering stabilizer, but that’s only because it’s starting to bump steer a bit.

That seems to be the consensus view: no power at all.

22RE’s have their own issues, including their head gaskets, but this is the 3VZE, and there is no definite fix. I’d still rather have the 3VZE, though, 150hp and 2 tons vs 110hp and 2 tons.

I think I’d go for the $7,000 willies. That rig is nice but at that price point I’d just buy a 4 door wrangler.

True, but if you are going V6 you might as well get a newer one that finally makes some power. Buddy bought a 2013 used recently and loves it for towing... much better than his  FZJ80 Cruiser actually. 270HP, or so I think.

I take it back then. It looked really clean but it was also getting up there in miles.

Theres a reason it's called the 3.slow. And its probably been mentioned but the head gaskets and I think water pump are going to need replacing if you want to trust your truck.

There is a very good reason why this generation of Hilux/4Runner were a prime candidate for an LS or Buick V6 swap thanks to Marks Adapters . It also continued to contribute to the Hilux nickname ‘Rollux’...

Granted it is lifted with larger tires, but it would be about 5 seconds quicker if it were a manual.

I owned a 22R pickup (5 years) , and a 22RE Celica (briefly) .

I would definitely recommend a 4-banger 4Runner over the 3.0

Or bump up the budget and get... any 3rd gen, any of them.

The dealership “video” is entertaining. “Nissan infused the interior with such amenities as: tachometer, skid plates, ...” (and ends breathlessly with “air conditioning”).

I knew my Jeep was missing something. Skid plates inside the vehicle!
