I have seen flights in the $20-40 range to Vegas from LAX before but that is a new low! I am not looking to fly there on that date but came across it while researching creative methods to get an affordable flight home for christmas without having to fly on Spirit (not that Frontier is any better of course).
Flights in general look super cheap when just given the “within the next 6 month window”. Using the “explore” feature is probably one of my favorite things to do since crazy cheap stuff just pops out sometimes. And its wild to me how distance isnt really directly proportional to cost either.
But for my actual dates that I need to get home for Christmas , and an end goal of the NY/NJ area in mind, its a bit more bleak.
And I really need to find a way to filter out Spirit but the “airlines” drop down at the top is not doing what I need it to. I am most likely going to take a long layover in Vegas Thursday night since I can get on Delta for $190 total through there with the ~7 hour custom layover. But it sure beats spending slightly more on Spirit (with layover in Vegas anyways) or spending almost double for any other flight out of LA. I can try other dates I guess too but it just means more days off than I want to use at that point. I also find it mildly entertaining trying to find creative flight paths.

Have you considered Amtrak? If you leave by the 22nd you can probably get there by New Year’s Day for under $3,000.
The best travel mini-hack is to fly on the actual holiday, not the days surrounding it. I’m a devout Christian, but the idea that Jesus just maybe sorta was born roughly around this particular day is a distant second to the actual trip and visiting family. I just look at it as “easy time off work”

Haha yeah thats some hokey bullshit. Im pretty sure theres some fees that are flat dollar amounts rather than percentages too making this a super low actual fare. Looking at the website, its actually a total price of $14.31 and subtracting out the taxes and fees, a fare of $0.01. Not kidding, ONE CENT!
But the options availa ble:
Of course this makes all of the addons and crap they try to sell cost way more than the flight itself. Even the travel insurance costs more than the ticket!
I suppose thats how the airline really makes any money at all to begin with. It took me many clicks just to get to the page where I could see the fare breakdown, its like going to a used car dealer except at least everything is pretty understandable and un-shady.

Having actually done this, it kinda sucks how long of my day is wasted with that. Although I actually slept quite nicely on the Greyhound bus, its was much more comfortable than the Spirit Airlines flight. That is what I did last christmas. But for the same price, I would never take a bus haha. And I would gladly pay to avoid dealing with the hassle this time. The real annoyances are getting to the bus to begin with in LA (no easier than going to LAX) and delays causing more headaches.
The worst part was that when I took the bus home on my return from Vegas, I googled flights day of and there was a $25 united flight if I waited a couple more hours which was actually about $10 cheaper than the damn bus!!

Agreed, which is why I flew back to LA on Christmas last time. That was a great deal and worked out perfectly. But I already have my return flight booked on the 26th. Airport will be busy but I scored a very good deal around $160 so it was worthwhile.

My best flight remains Chicago to Denver for $31 (after taxes and fees) on Spirit. Yeah, it was like a flying bus but for $31 I’m not about to complain.

Im imagining this:
Me - Thinking $3 peanuts seems rather expensive but I am hungry..
FA - Would you like any food for purchase?
Me - Ill have the peanuts
FA - How many?
Me - One bag
FA - That has approximately 25 peanuts in it so that will be $75 plus tax makes that $126.33
Me - Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.....

The pop culture version loves it, and everyone else kinda goes along for the ride. Bottom line is we know almost nothing about Jesus between birth and age 30...including exact dates unless they fell on major Jewish holidays (which is why Easter is more certain).

I still contend that $165 from LAX to BCN was the best deal I have gotten considering it was 11 hours of flying but yeah for absolute cheapest has probably just been $40 to SLC so I havent booked too many of the super cheapos.

sbout right....and if you are flying to somewhere with a different currency.... expect to pay the exchange rate and then some on anything bought with the other currency....same on the way back

Thats why I enjoy my no fee credit cards that seem to get about the same exchange rate as google tells me anyways. Then when its a currency like Canadian dollars, I feel loaded with that exchange rate.

That’s only a start. My best to date was Stansted (near London) to Västerås (near Stockholm) for about €7. I did chicken out and add priority boarding but still a total of about €16.

Well my debit card also features the same lack of foreign transaction fee and is certainly my primary card to use. But I dont pay interest on my credit cards, just use them to build credit, earn rewards, and a bit of protection against my checking account getting hacked by a skimmer.

Frontier and Spirit debundle tickets. that $15 gets you there with nothing. Add even a backpack and they will charge you for carryons. A can of coke is over $2. They charge for water on short flights. Check total costs before comparing with other carriers.

Pssst! Ix-Nay on the egas-Vay onnection-cay, ok?
Don’t let that secret out of the bag!
I sometimes use the super-cheap LAX-LAS routes (it can be crazy expensive too , in high demand slots, like LAX to LAS on a Friday of a holiday weekend. Those same fares were over $500 on the Friday of Labor Day, FWIW) to connect to bargain carriers for onward connections that Allegiant, Spirit or Sun Country will provide to sad little destinations , er, wonderful places to visit back East.
So, yeah, it’s not uncommon to find $19 flights one-way, against the grain in and out of LAS.
On Labor Day Saturday I flew LAS-SFO on a freakin’ EMPTY (like 17 of us) 777 that had come INTO LAS full from SF. I do not understand the economics of this use of Big Iron on commuter routes.

At 39,000 feet you are closer to the Lord. At least that’s my theory.
Christmas is a great travel day. Light loads. The staff working made peace (and trade-days deals with co-workers) with working that day and respond to cheerful travelers.
My favorite air fare search site will sometimes throw “The AMTRAK Option” into search results... if I only notice the fare—
“Wow!! A $49 fare to Denver! That’s awesome.”
“Oh, three days to
co
nnect in SLC
?? What?”
“Ugh, AMTRAK’d!”

Oh im well aware of how they get you with the add-ons and crap. But if played properly, you can get a flight cheap with minimal inconvenience. Vegas for a few days, I could certainly get by with a backpack. But longer flights yeah I avoid Spirit, Frontier, and United for that reason. My favorite “budget” airline is always Southwest because they save me money by cutting costs rather than just cutting features. But they arent always actually cheap and its damn inconvenient to use their website instead of google flights. I never buy extras on any flights so I know how to play the budget game properly.

The problem with a lot of Christians (especially the old schoolers; doubly so for Catholics) is legalism...the believe that rule following is the cornerstone. Then they try to force that on others, which is bad for everyone.
If you want legalism, switch to Orthodox Judaism :)
