Job applications suck.

Every now and then, I'll come across a job I particularly want. Most recently, there's a successful local brewery looking for a warehouse worker, and the pay is great. But they want me to record a video telling them why they should choose me. Why can't you just do a phone interview or something? I'll probably do it, but I don't know what to say. I don't even like beer, so I can't say that I'm a fan of their company or anything. I'm going to see if they're openly political or something and maybe go along with that.

For this particular job though, don’t do the video application. Really? They require a video for a fucking waerhouse job? Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT demeaning that work at all, and it is a totally fine and respectable job, but not one that requires a video application.

The video shit is mainly used for media-related jobs

I work in recruiting and I would never subject a candidate to recording a video of themselves for an application. This is especially egregious for a damn warehouse position. WTF.

When I was job searching, I had a couple of companies ask me to record videos like this, and I told both of them to kindly fuck the hell right off. Because I didn’t want to record that video of myself and no way in hell would I take a job where I’d be the person asking other people to record said videos.

I’m currently on the job hunt and I hate shit like that. Or the stupid questions where the obvious answer is the only answer, “I need a job and I can do this one ” but you have to make up some bs to sell it. Pretty soon I’m going to just transition to brutal honesty when asked, “Why [this place]?” or, “Why [this position]?” my response will be, “Because you posted a job that I’m qualified for and I need a job.” I’m tired of all the dumbfuckery in the job hunting process.

If it were me and I really wanted the position I’d try to come up with something a bit quirky and fun, but still gets the message across that you’re the person for the job. I’d avoid politics.

Yeah that’s bullshit. I applied for a job once and they wanted me to call in for a phone interview but just interview myself on their voicemail and they’d maybe call me back, that was a hard pass for me. If you can’t take 10 goddamn minutes for a phone interview, that’s not somewhere I want to work.

Bleurgh. I’ve had places ask for video clips, but it’s mostly if the job involves...doing videos. A warehouse worker probably won’t!

I’m so sick of putting out job applications only to get nowhere with them. Most of the places I’m applying to know of me anyway, so I should just be able to sit Lucky Bunny on the table (she’s Lucky Bunny for a reason), demand a comfortable salary for wherever the location is (at least enough for occasional trackdays, parshwagen parts and crapcan storage) and ask when I friggin’ start. But that’s not how it works because my life is pointless trash, and everything usually just goes to someone who’s already local anyway . It’s extra frustrating when you think about how much unpaid labor has gone into all of these applications only to get nowhere. Absolutely nowhere. I’m everyone’s unwanted leftover, I guess.

Damn , I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble!

Mine isn’t going much better, sadly. I’m underqualified for most of the things I’d enjoy, and there’s a huge difference between what I’m able to do and what I can easily tolerate doing. My dream job would be just writing and publishing short stories, and it's hard sometimes to shake that and make myself focus on realistic options. Honestly, the main reason I quit my old one is to focus on mental health, and I've since realized that I only made things worse.

Each state may vary, but the EEOC specifically says that applicants should not ask for photos ( https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/practices/ ). The same point applies to video, of course. Companies that do this are just asking for trouble.

It was terrible, I wanna say it was like CarMax or something, but basically the automated system asked the questions and then it just recorded the answers. I don’t even like regular phone interviews though, let alone that bullshit.
