They *can* be street-legal, depending on state

This is in Pennsylvania. I do not think it's legal here.

I think Arizona’s requirements were close to “Does it have headlights and brake lights?”

You know, if they run clean and quiet, have lights and mirrors, carry insurance , and are operated by licensed drivers in accordance with all traffic laws on limited speed roadways, I’m AOK with it. Might actually be better off with more of them on the road, as counterintuitive as it seems. Until they get broadsided by something, of course... but they knew the risks.

i really wish something like that could be street legal.  i’d love something that was basically an enclosed quad.

State, or town/county?

I think these should be legal in more places (on roads up to 45 mph speed limit).

This one surprised me because I live in a metro area that has over 800,000 people. Not exactly rural. Of course if you go downtown, you find people riding dirt bikes with no lights at night. Not very safe.

Oh I’m not bothered by it, I just found it interesting. What bothers me more are when people drive dirt bikes and quads on the streets at n ight with no lights on. That's kind of dangerous.

I agree. And while they're at it, make the Mahindra Roxor street legal too.

I mean, it’s at least as safe as a motorcycle, right?

Kinja'd!!! Chuckles > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

Kinja'd!!!0

Absolutely. And probably safer than the 94 Miata that I used to drive with no functioning air bags. At least in a Roxor you have a chance of being seen.

If some of those dirtbike and quad inner city grouprides I’ve seen on the internet are of any indication, m y aforementioned ATV Utopia would be quickly ruined by idiots

One problem is that they generally do not have DOT tires on them. I use to drive my RZR about a mile down the road to the rural gas station/grain elevator; it would go 55mph easily, but the tires were not happy on asphalt and I wouldn’t want to drive it in any sort of traffic.

Again, it depends.  I was just pointing out that there are some localities in the States that a RZR can be made street legal

Right. As far as I know, it’s all local. No state has gone that far (yet).

EDIT: Unless this is correct...

I more meant, some states have n’t explicitly outlawed it, allowing the local municipalities to either look the other way or endorse it

Yeah it’s rare to see UTVs on the road in PA at all. Small ATVs and dirt bikes being wheelied along the centerline of the road at dusk, with no lights , on the other hand...

I work across the street from this wegmans, and I’ve had lunch there probably 3 times a week, every week, for nearly 3 years. This is the first time I’ve seen a UTV there.

As for dirt bikes and ATVs at night without any lights, I see that too often in Allentown. That is just an accident waiting to happen.
