Just to be clear, he asked me for an offer

Not quite a week ago I told the salesman at a dealership that if they drop the price I’d be happy to know. The salesman responded that I should make an offer and he asked what price would get the sale done. I considered my options; sent over an offer that was $900 under current asking price . I was informed they weren’t willing to go down any more on their listed price.

Wait, what? You asked me for an offer. I know we are a little ways apart, that’s why I encouraged you to be in touch if you dropped the price. Why did you ask me for an offer if you didn’t want to go down at all? I get you were trying to stay in contact, work the lead, and hopefully close a sale but now I’m confused.

Unless you really, really want this specific car , then stick by your guns. No need to feel bad for telling the salesman what you’re willing to pay.  Maybe they’ll give you a better deal after a couple days of no activity, maybe they’ll sell it to someone else for a lot more.

My dad once bought a used minivan that was listed at $1700, h e paid $700. His opening offer was $500, and the salesman eventually came around.

But if it’s a harder car to find, you might kick yourself later for letting it go.

The dealership where I bought my last car wouldn't negotiate over email. They came down $3000 after I told them I had financing and wanted to buy the car. Might be worth it to go see them in person?

When they call back in a week, knock another $200 off of your offer and tell them take it or leave it.

I am not sure how much the car actually is, but they are betting for $900 you will eventually meet their asking price. It’s a standoff!

If they can’t figure out how to deal over email, then time to look elsewhere that will.  I hate those email responses... come on in and look it over, or some other nonsense...  I know what I want and I just want your best price.  I ran into a dealership in Dayton that was excellent for this.  We had a negotiated price all set and all I had to do was a test drive in this instance.  Showed up at the scheduled time and the porter brought the car around and I took it for a spin.  Super easy.  And after that, I won’t waste time with dealers that can’t figure this process out.

When they come down to your price, tell them the new number is $900 less than that.

They just want to keep you hooked or involved....the longer they have contact with you the better the chance at a sale....even if they didn’t budge on price. They hope you take what is offered and call it a day.

Good luck!

Used car, current ask is $13,667 or something. They’ve knocked it down a couple times but they started really high. Shrug.

Yeah; it’s been on their lot a while and there are somewhat comparable cars nearby. I’m not too worried.

I did look at it in person once. I suppose I could go back if I’m in that area. But I detailed exactly what I would pay; and that I would come in tonight. I hope the fact that I was serious came through.

I’ve looked at it already so that’s even one less step; I’m ready to go in and sign.

I just sent my dealer email message for a new car purchase. Have done this three times with great success. I have so far been able to ignore those dealers that just can’t get on board with this approach . . . hopefully that will be true again this time. In the past, at least three have been within $800 of each other, so I have confidence that I was getting close to the best deal . . . then I asked for a couple of hundred off, and got it.

Sorry for rambling, I’m on a bit of adrenaline after starting the official bidding war.

I never would have gotten the deal I got on my car without showing them I was willing to walk out and go somewhere else. The car was advertised at $ 22k and I paid $ 19k. When I emailed and told them I wanted to pay $19k they said “good luck in your search, if you want this car you will have to pay $22k.” The conversation was different when I was there in person. I  am old enough to remember when you actually had to talk to people when you make a large financial transactions, so doing things face to face as opposed to over email is not a big deal to me.
