Been meaning to ask a favor of you. Would you ask your parents if they remember a wooden ship sitting on display between the Bridgewater Mall and the river back in the 80's? Been looking for any info or image. I strongly believe it was this model of the HMS N amur but can’t confirm.

Was this a full-size replica, or just a small model? “Bridgewater Mall and the river” - did you mean by this that she was up on LAND as a display? Or she was near the mall docked in the water on the river...?

That’s a fairly complete (like...95%) archive of all the Bridgewater Bulletin newspapers since 1899...the browsing system they used for the online upload is TERRIBLE (I had no hand in that, else I would’ve used something vastly less hard to navigate), but if you do a search for the year you want to look through (1981, 1982 or whatever), it should find all from that year. Sadly, they didn’t have the budget to get a large form-factor OCR scanner for the project, so there is no text searching through individual newspapers...you just have to read through them yourself if you know roughly the date you want! :(

No idea if there is anything in there though!

It was on the land between the back of the mall and the river, up on display.

Not sure if it was full size or a scale model but it was big. The picture I replied with I found quite by accident (taken in Hali Harbour in the 60's ) . If you look at the people on the ship it’s a large scale model. It may not be what I’m looking for though. It was most definitely this style ship. Black and bright yellow it was.

This is what I’m learning and am finding so interesting. Despite being there for many years, very few people remember. It was there long enough I think it was removed because it was rotting to nothing. It’s so strange, you couldn’t miss it. Human memory is weird.

The HMS Rose (later renamed the HMS Surprise for a movie) was built in Lunenburg in the ‘70s as a replica of the original HMS Rose ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Rose_(1757) ) and likely would’ve been around on display in various places back then, but would’ve been DOCKED somewhere as she was a full-size, real working vessel . She was often painted in a dark gray and yellow, which would’ve looked like black perhaps ?

Mom was thinking about it - she DOES remember SOMETHING now that she puts her mind to it...something about a ship being there ‘that kids used to play on’, but that’s as much as she remembers at this point. I was doing some searching for photos online but to no avail. If I think of it, I’ll ask some other folks I know.

Nowadays? I don’t think she was ever in Bridgewater that I can ever remember.

She usually docks in Lunenburg at the waterfront as that is her berth between voyages. :)

I’ve sailed on her 3 times actually, visited once in Lunenburg and left for a 3 week voyage from Lunenburg a separate time. Good family friends with the main Captain and the ship in general.

happens at night, so police can’t use footage i have  unless the car rego is clearly visible and person driving is clearly visible. as they’res only one of me and usually several of them when they do it, plus being armed with bottles of beer. i don’t get too close due to safety fears

I don’t blame you...sucks they wouldn’t at least investigate a noise complaint. You shouldn’t need visible rego and visible faces for that...plus if they snuck up on them they might catch ‘em in the act?
