I’m of the opinion that most cars are improved with more lights. The more there are and brighter they are the better. Yet only a couple Oppos have Baja Design fever. Why?
Also, I really want a subie.

I was genuinely asking. I've never looked into it. I've always wished that they made a rally ready trim for cars like the crosstrek, fiesta and the rest of the small hatchbacks and crossovers. I think they'd sell really well.

Do run PIAA LP270s in factory fog light spot, mine never came with fog lights. They are 6000k, throw lots of light, but the big thing for me is that they are SAE/DOT compliant yet still super bright. A imed lower then recommend they still do a killer job. When they are off they look completely stock.

L azy and I’m really never in a place I could use them... I do carry a spot light in the trunk, but honestly I’ve only ever needed that once. But they do look darn cool, saw a Crosstrek the other day with a couple pairs of the square LED type set up on the roof rack that looked really nice - a couple pointing forward and a couple off to the side kind of a ditch lights.

I designed a pre-runner style brush bar for the crown vic which would have also had room to mount a couple big lights inside it; alas I never got around to making it before the rust and age took that car too far to return.

This isn’t my car, but I’ve got an AMC Eagle and I’m eventually going to make my own front grill with either three rows of light bars or more likely 2-3 square lights embedded in the grill OR I’m going to add 2 lights into the bumper. Haven’t decided yet. I’m also not at that point yet. Possibly next year.

1. Because most modern headlights are very good.
2. 99% of people don’t drive in situations needing extra lighting.
3. For the most part they make the front of a car less aerodynamic, more expensive to repair, and much uglier.
4. Every time I see some jackass driving around town with blindingly bright extra l ights on I want to pull them over and punch them in the face.

As a mostly city driver I don’t have much opportunity to legitimately/legally used bright lighting. I’ve only ever used the fog lights on the BMW once.
I’ve wanted to put some OE style fogs in the Ranger or a nice flush mounted light bar in the lower bumper opening, but the cost/use ratio does
n’t make sense.

I usually get planar light projection fog lights like the Hella Comet 550's, they project a flat light pattern that lets me run them on the road legally since they will not blind anyone.

I always wanted rally lights for my Clubman when I lived out in the country but now I virtually never drive places I need or even could use them. The factory MINI rally lights are probably lame but I liked how they look, but they’re a hella expensive option.

I’m of pretty much the opposite opinion and so far I’ve been very pleased with the headlights on all my cars. My A4’s were probably my least favorite because they were halogens but they actually did an amazing job. I mostly drive in the city but my E90 is amazing on dark country roads.

All three of our vehicles have auxiliary spot lights ...and bull bars . None of them have eaten a kangaroo...yet.
The LED spots on the Nissan are AUD $8 0 eBay things that are surprisingly effective...
All the spotties are ADR legal although the setup on the VW isn’t because it doesn’t have an isolation switch and t he spots always come on when high beam is triggered.

I live in the city, so tacking on extra lights would be completely unnecessary. It would also get me pulled over. The biggest reason I do not have extra lights is that they look terrible.

In what circumstances have you found that helpful? I’ve considered hiding lights behind a grille, but I’m seriously thinking of an LP Aventure bumper protector anyway so exterior mounting would be easy, but they are kind of pricey. Wondering about performance with a set up like yours.

the biggest advantage is that no one sees i have a led bar when they are off.
Second advantage is no rusted led bumper mounts since i’m in the rust belt. and we have about 6 months of winter here( snowing this morning)
I have to drive 1 hour of rural highway to get to work in the cold and dark.
So this with my high beams means i easily see if there is a Moose on the side of the road.
Since it’s only one led row high it doesn’t block the air flow of that small opening.
Note that my first pic was before i mounted it about a 1/2 inch higher.
If you have a forester this is a 30 inch led bar, and the bumper covers about half of one led at each end.

I’m likely buying a 2020 Outback in the near future. Probably replacing the grille with the “sport” grille, which may create opportunity to mount something behind it and actually have it help light up forest roads. That’s why I wondered how effectively yours works. Thanks!

I replaced my halogen projectors with proper HID projectors (Morimoto D2S 4.0 Bi-xenon) and I haven’t had the need to add additional lighting beyond that. Nighttime is like daylight, especially with the High beams on

I have a lot of aux lights, I only use them off-road and when I’m the only one on the road. If there’s other cars, they’re off ( unless some douche has their brights on, then they will have regrets ).

I agree, people who run them around other traffic are asses, but to say someone is an ass just because they have lights mounted is quite a dick move.

People say they don’t use them around other cars, but coming around a corner and getting a retina full of 300 watt LED isn’t fun. Sure they turn them off, but they usually wait far too long and still blind the oncoming traffic. Anywhere other cars have the potential to be, there’s the potential to dangerously blind someone if you’re half a second too late on the switch. And regular headlights are bright enough to see at speed limit speeds anyway, so there’s really no need for them on-road.
Long_Voyager, Now With More Caravanny Goodness

I don’t know about you, but I can generally see another car’s light reflecting around the corner/ over a hill long before they are actually in view of my headlights, so I dim them long before they are even able to see them. It’s usually the oncoming car’s factory HID/LEDs that end up blinding me before they realize they need to dim their lights.
My giant LED only gets used off road, my bar mounted halogens get used on road. The lower set are aimed low/wide to act as “fog” lights in crappy weather/light the ditches on back roads. My upper set are used in place of my inferior factory high beams. Both combined are likely less powerful than most vehicle’s factory LED low beams, and they’re damn sure less blinding.
As someone who drives a lot of backroads and drives off road often, aux lights are a life saver, whether you like it or not.

It’d be nice if more people did. It’s not about whether I can see them, I’m not the one in control of the other person’s lights when they’re blinding me.
It’s usually the oncoming car’s factory HID/LEDs that end up blinding me before they realize they need to dim their lights.
Also a problem, yes.
My giant LED only gets used off road, my bar mounted halogens get used on road.
As someone who drives a lot of backroads and drives off road often, aux lights are a life saver, whether you like it or not.
1st, I also drive a lot of back roads. Pretty much nothing but back roads, I rarely drive into town and am only on the highway when I’m going on vacation these days. I can see fine with my regular 90's econobox headlights. They’re not necessary on the road. Fog lights are handy though, but still not necessary. They’re also not the problem.
2nd, the question was why don’t more people have auxiliary lights, and my answer was that most people don’t go offroad and have no use for them. That you use them offroad only furthers my statement that they’re offroad lights, and most people don’t bother with them because they don’t offer any benefit to them .
