I have a strong dislike for the Boy Scouts of America as an organization — an ugly history of bigotry towards gay men who served honorably in particular and their views towards LGBTQ community in general, suspect inclusivity, and cherry-picking religion to what suits them at the time.

Luckily, maturity has a way of changing one’s views. In my case, a reminder that the children are the honorable Scouts and not the organization.

Walking out of a Lowe’s I was greeted by a Scout yesterday selling various popcorn snacks — microwave 18 packs, mixed cheeses, Carmel Corn, Kettle Corn, and a Crunch ‘n Munch-like large bag of Carmel, Peanuts, Cashews, and Almonds (I guess that’s more like Poppycock instead).

So I could resist. I had to get something. Then I made the mistake of asking what the prices were. The cheapest was $10, the most expensive was $30 AND IT WAS ON DISCOUNT.

I went with the Carmel Corn.

It was $10.

It taste like the house brand at a dollar store.

But what disappointed me the most: the Scouts are only getting 73% of the profits!!!

I also learned that I missed this year’s Bathurst 1000 last weekend

Hopefully the Scouts will get a better fundraising partner with better product next time.

My brother was an Eagle Scout, and I feel quite comfortable saying that the Girl Scouts absolutely crush the boys in terms of fundraising promotions. Girl Scout cookies are overpriced, but at least they are pretty tasty, that Boy Scout popcorn was always pretty weak.

It’s a lot easier to fork over $4 for some cookies and feel ok about it. I don’t even like popcorn, but an  89-cent bag is fine if I decide I want some.
