I was teaching a trumpet lesson today, and I noticed that the student had this sharpened pencil taped into his band binder. I asked him if this was his “In case of emergency, break glass” pencil. He said no, he had failed two “pencil tests” where he had to show the director that he had a pencil, so his mom taped it in there so he would never fail again. He’ll never write with it, but he’ll always pass. Brilliant.

Maybe it’s the engineer in me, but I would have suggested that your student have his mom tape a small zipper pouch with two pencils. One to use and one to lose.

I do think it’s a clever way of passing the pencil test. I just hope he actually also has a pencil when he needs one.

Knowing this kid, it’s best this way. He can always bum a pencil off his neighbor. That’s what I do.

He would lose both. Ask me how I know.

Fair enough, I typically subscribe to if it’s stupid but it works, it ain’t stupid.

I’ve taken care of kids, I know how it goes. I’ve found that like designing online tools for laymen users, designing the experience to prevent most likely causes of failure seem to help a lot.

It doesn’t always work, of course

I teach my perpetually pencil losing students to mine the ground. I haven’t bought a pen or a pencil in over a decade. They’re all over the floor in schools.

Reminds me of the time I ‘accidentally’ laminated our draught person’s entire collection of drawing pencils using our poster laminater... certainly made it easier for him to pick the right pencil. Especially after bitching endlessly about not having sufficient space on his desk to display and find them easily...

One of my boys  has already learned that lesson and picks up every pencil he finds. He’s got quite a collection. That’s how I got through high school.

I’ve never heard of a “pencil test”. It sounds like it’s literally a check that you have a pencil? Is that right?

Sounds pointless.
