Watched the first half in between studying for water management, and this would definitely be something I’d show if I was still teaching environmental sciences.
I like how they touched on how family farms (actua
l family farms, as a hedge fund isn’t a family
)
help maintain biodiversity on account of them growing a variety of foods. Environmental degradation is caused just as much (if not more) by a loss in biodiversity as it is by rapid climate change. The main issue with rapid climate change is that is results in a loss of biodiversity.
Smaller farms are able to maintain biodiversity because they have the freedom, and the necessity, to grow a variety of crops, rather than single cash crops. Giant farms can focus on one crop because they have lots of money and resources backing them up in case of a bad year. Smaller farms also tend to rely more on integrated pest management (IPM) as a way of reducing crop loss. The citrus grower even mentioned his use of IPM. The use of IPM further maintains biodiversity as you’re allowing more species to exist with the crops.
All this is to say that a lot of regulations that pose as being environmental in nature, are many times bullshit. They aren’t forcing that farmer to buy new trucks in order to reduce CO2 production, they’re forcing him to buy new trucks in order to force him out of business so his and other’s land can be bought up by these “hedge fund farms”. Trashing older trucks in order to build new trucks isn’t going to do shit for reducing atmospheric CO2. The only thing that’s going to help is to reduce consumption. Building more trucks increases consumption.
Smarter legislation would involve subsidizing the conversion of those trucks to use cleaner engines (maybe even set up a research project at the local university to create a solar powered truck). You’d end up cleaning up the air (a win), and keeping your local family businesses running. That offers multiple benefits, as you’ll keep more money in order local economy (a fucking hedge fund ain’t putting money back into the Central Valley, it’s sucking it out like a vampire) and you’re helping to maintain biodiversity by maintaining smaller, more diverse farms.
I wish these guys’ luck, because neither the big boys in California nor the bi g boys in Washington are gonna help them out.
As asshole Sonny Purdue so encouragingly stated the other day, “In America the big get bigger and the small go out.”
Fuck these assholes, I’ll continue to support my local family farms.

Can you elaborate on what a private attorney general act lawsuit is?
Also, I can’t possibly fathom how the state would go after employers for incredibly small violations. I mean, the thought of citing a shop for testing a car on the “wrong” smog machine, not punishing the technician, but issuing the shop a citation makes sense, right? And it’s not at all ridiculous that the California AG handling the case thinks they should settle, but the agency overrules it because why not waste state resources and force the employer to file countless briefs and then go in front of an ALJ, who, apparently, doesn’t even have a final say. Even if the ALJ rules against the state apparently the BAR has the power to overrule the ALJ. NICE!
