The 2009 Forester is gone. All good things must come to an end; however, I wish this one wasn’t so sudden. After the diagnosis of head-gasket failure, I knew it was time to move on.

I ended up selling it to a former co-worker as is. He plans to perform the repair himself, and he should have no trouble getting it back on the road. I would have held onto it for longer, however I’m not in a position to undertake such a repair myself. I wasn’t going to pay a shop the quoted ~$3,200 to get it back on the road, either. Reliable transportation is what matters most at this point in my life, as boring as that is.

The Forester was my immediate family’s first Subaru, and was the first car that was actually mine. It was the car behind my user handle. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , it had a good run, though it feels like it was cut short. It will continue to live on, I have no doubt.

Something new is here though; a hopefully worthy successor:

A separate post is coming shortly!

Is that really what it costs to do a head gasket repair on those? I feel like it was around $700 on my Civic, which made the decision much easier.

Byebye Forester!

Not only are there twice as many head gaskets (because flat-4) but there is also zero clearance since they’re on the sides ; I strongly suspect the engine has to come out to change them.

I feel like my coworker only paid about $1600 for his subie  at an indie shop after he screwed up fixing it himself. But I might be mis-remembering. That just seems really high, either way.

Sometimes an indie will do it without removing the engine. It’s a huge pain in the ass, but it saves a lot of labour. Dealers would do it the official way, where you remove the engine.

For best results, the engine needs to come out. It can be done still in the car; however, if you’re going to go through all the trouble, you might as well do it right.

I know that one of these days I’ll likely have one of these apart that far, but now wasn’t the time.

This was through a dealer. There used to be a Subaru specific independent shop in the general area that I would have trusted this job to , however, they have since closed and moved state.

MM54 has it right. Little access to remove the heads, to the engine has to come out to do the job properly.  Also, t wo heads, so double the labor once the engine is out.
