Michigan state police cars are usally beat to hell. You can get some deals from local municipalities. This guy here is a known flipper might as well go to the source.
C harger cop cars usally go for 7500 to 9000 on here.
Still kinda miss my p71.

Be forewarned: anyone who says that used police cars are a good deal because they’re fleet vehicles and are better taken care of are either lying or stupid. These cars are thrashed. Long hours on the engines idling, maintenance happens when it can be taken out of rotation, high speeds, heavy stops, driven over curbs, crap roads at speed, whatever. These things are driven hard and put away wet.
The interior will have had some blood, piss, shit, vomit, what have you in it. Cleaning does a decent job, but for peace of mind... I wouldn’t want to sit in the back of one.
Just a heads up.

I’d want to see the hour meter on those first. Understanding that the miles they do have were either highway driving or 0-100 sprints. So there shouldn’t be any carbon on the valves at least ;).

I know theres a Michigan Tahoe in the Bourbonnais area and it looks fairly rust free. Charger is a great deal, hemi awd is rare

You could possibly get a civilian V 8 Charger (No AWD) for a lot fewer miles and better interior amenities at that price. Might be a year or two older.

I just got a 2009 GMC Yukon with 112k for 15,250 out the door. I had to drive to ohio for it, but you can get some great vehicles for 15k.
It’s gorgeous inside. And if I didn’t insist on a full size that can tow 8700 pounds and 3 rows I could have had a lot less miles.

thats the thing though, im really not a big fan of the pre-facelift chargers. and i like the idea of a V8 and AWD which was only available to police departments

They’re usually retired from service between 90k and 150k miles. Or a set number of years. It's dependent on what laws and policies are in place, and if there's a budget to support the changeover.

I would stay away from the explorers until the 2019 model years are retired, the transmissions are notorious for grenading themselves. Also, turbocharged engines are maintenance headaches in and of themselves, especially on a tired car.
The Charger would be the better buy of the two, but go over it with a fine tooth comb, as Chargers also come with their own bag of dicks maintenance-wise.

It was available to regular customers for a few years, but wasn’t a big seller, so it’s probably rare. I think it had a take rate of something like 2% before they discontinued it.

Charger looks the part but at that mileage $13,700 seems steep for something that probably also spent quite a bit of time idling. I wonder if you can pull the number of engine hours from the ECU ( I have no clue if that is a recorded data point). Good news is that a used v8 engine with transmission combo is only $900 on eB ay.

15k could get you a brand new car
You could get a brand new Dodge Journey for 15k, if you need something that big. Otherwise, you could get a Spark, Fit, or leftover 2018 Yairs hatchback (the one that’s actually a real Toyota)
If you’re lucky, you could get a brand new or almost new
Regal hatchback (I’ve seen brand-
new ones for 19k)

You have very specific requirement so used police charger is the way to go.
There was a nice Caprice in their listings I liked . v8 RWD basically a Pontiac G8. Very nice with only 24K miles

Having worked a bit in l aw e nforcement previously, I would be very, very careful buying a used police vehicle. Generally speaking, they are treated as tools of the job no differently than a baton or the flashlight on a duty belt: a disposable tool used hard and replaced when worn . Anything used for patrol work has led a far harder life than the miles on the dash would indicate, and they are likely to have spent many hundreds or even thousands of hours of idling.
If you have to buy one, you want to shop by jurisdiction that owned them after researching how different agencies maintain and use units. Departments that assign cars as take home units are far more desirable. When a cop gets to take the car home and uses the same one everyday, they tend to get treated substantially better than motor pool units or cars from departments that hot seat cars. Some agencies are a whole lot more diligent about maintenance than others.
A supervisor’ s unit or administrative cars used by detectives and the like and not used for patrol work are the only cars I could imagine owning. They will have led a far more gentle life, even if supervisors’ cars have still likely spent enormous amounts of time id ling. Look for cars that have no evidence of previous graphics or prisoner cages installed. Administrative cars will also often have carpeting and few, if any, indications of light bars or external lighting hav ing been mounted in the past .
If I were going to buy a used police unit, I’d probably target state police/trooper/highway patrol agencies. Those cars have often done a lot less idling than cars used by local agencies that spend a lot more time responding to calls for service.

not really that specific, just preferences for that specific model. like im not a fan of any F150 before 2009. one of which im also looking at, its just not a former police car lol but the two requirement i do have for this search is its gotta have AWD and four doors.

So you’re in the business of recommending that people buy miserable, depressing cars just because they’re new?

A brand new car is better than a used cop car that was driven hard
And the Explorer and Charger are hardly the greatest cars

15k for a beat-up used cop car that was driven hard, and even new they weren’t that great. The cars OP is considering have 100k police
miles! Not the same as 100k civilian miles!
If you think the new cars I mentioned are miserable and depressing, wait until you buy a used car driven hard and fucked around with! THEN you will be miserable and depressed!
The Explorer and Charger aren’t great cars, even if you got one brand new with zero miles. A late-model retail version is probably worse, and a high-mile car driven hard is the worst!

I have a late-99 F250 Super Duty 7.3 that had 241,000 miles of filthy farm life on it. No misery or depression here.
Explorers and Chargers aren’t great...but they’re pretty decent. However, n o one should recommend a new Dodge Journey to anyone, regardless of how cheap it is. It’s a fucking piece of shit.

10/16/2019 at 16:32 | 0 |
Yeah, the Journey is a cheap piece of shit, but isn’t the Charger a cheap piece of shit too? It’s on a 25 year-old platform
I don’t normally recommend the Journey to anyone, but I did in this case since he wants a new car for 15k and is considering high-mileage beat-up cop cars.
A new Explorer or Charger is better than a new Journey. A low-mileage CPO retail-model Explorer or Charger is better than a new Journey. A high-mileage beat-up cop car is, at best, no better than a new Journey.
I
t would be different
if
cops used Hondas and Toyotas. If it was an Accord, Camry, or Highlander. Those cars are actually good and could handle 100k police miles. Those might actually be better than a new Journey (or even a new Charger or Explorer)

Here is the original auction for the Explorer (they paid $7632 for it) https://mibid.bidcorp.com/auctions/2014-ford-police-interceptor-awd-4dr-suv-98-363-miles-s4316/59902
Here is the or iginal auction for the Charger (They paid $8907 for it) https://mibid.bidcorp.com/auctions/2016-dodge-charger-4dr-awd-police-sedan-113-243-miles-s7644/60381
The reason I know about these is that when I used to live in MI, I used to bid on these auctions and resell the cars for a bit of cash after I drove them a bit, cleaned them up some and took care of whatever maintenance they needed. This was still back in the more affordable days of the Crown Vic’s and previous generation Tahoe’s.
While I always told the time to go up and inspect the cars before I bid, I found that most cars were pretty solid and if the cars did have an issue, it was almost always mentioned in the description of the auction. Michigan State Police take pretty good care of their vehicles overall and while they still face the wear and tear of police use, they come out of service better than a lot of other cars that I have look at.

No problem. I wish I still lived in Metro Detroit as this was a fun way for me to make a few extra bucks a few times a year and the new Explorers and Chargers are a lot more fun to drive than the Crown Vics
