On a jet from SEA-ATL For 4 hours AMA. This week we flew ATL-SNA, SNA-SEA and now home. Did Disney and my mother in law’s 70th birthday party on
Whidbey Island. Good fun all around.

When did they get rid of the tiny engines and go to the high bypass turbo fans, that jet doesn’t look that old but those engines look hilarious .

How fast are you hustling to get from SEA to ATL within 4 hours?

Production ended in ‘88. There aren’t a lot left today (I think there are a few charter/freight airlines that fly them because the low-bypass engines are less susceptible to damage on rough fields).
Last time I saw one operation was in 2012, a charter plane in Las Vegas.

I didn’t start flying frequently until 1998 so it is likely I flew on a few of these but not many.

Which power puff girl would you have as pilot if you had to choose?

I think they can get larger engines on the airframe BTW. Just mount them further forward so you can elevate the center axis of the turbine— get some high-bypass engines, or maybe those next gen geared turbofans.
Oh, wait a minute. Maybe somebody did that...

Not to go off on this Tirade-of-The-Day, but it’s just sad that the engineers doing THE VERY EARLY wind tunnel tests recognized what a handful this was going to be to fly with rapid changes in the pitch access. It jumped out of the data but...
The movement forward of the Center of Lift, in pitch, is a huge problem.

If you ever fly to FCA I’ll let you drive the Datsun. As long as it is not winter time.

There was a lady at my mother in laws party that showed up in a lively 280Z. Great shape for a driver. She said her and her husband were car people. That was her runabout, but they also have 9 Packards!

The 280z is a great road car but not nearly as visceral as a 240z . There is just something about a super light weight car with a high reeving motor.

That is a really old 737.....
If this is it, it looks like it was converted to air cargo

I believe that the last -200, the one with thos e little JT8D engines, was made in 1988 for Air New Zealand. The -300, the first one with the big CFM56s, came out about 3-4 years earlier.

According to Wikipedia the last -200 went to Xiamen Airlines on 8/8/88 (the Chinese like their 8s). The first high-bypass 737 (a -300) went to USAir on 11/28/84.
