Very underwhelming first impression. I’m not even disappointed by the fact that it’s on the FWD UKL platform. Interior quality and space have noticeably improved but are still not quite on par with the Golf or A Class. So why would you lease/buy one over the A Class or A3 (which will be replaced soon so leasing rates are good)?

Yeah, if this were a Kia or something I’d say it was fairly attractive, but it just doesn’t look like a BMW. And that’s not because it’s FWD - the 1 Series sedan they’re making in China is FWD and reasonably convincing :

I used to think FWD was the enemy......until I drove a Saturn Ion. Remember these three words:
Electronic
Power
Steering
The reason why most modern cars will never be as fun as a 1998 Civic Ex Sedan with 170,000kms

It’s not that electric PS can’t give you steering feel, it’s that manufacturers think ( probably correctly) that consumers don’t want steering feel.

Agree. F chassis 3 series are particularly horrible, for me anyway. I’ve got one of each. Electronic power assisted, hydraulic power assisted, and not power assisted. I’ll take the last one every time because of them feels.

I drove a lot of cars last year shopping. It’s not so much that the 3 series is worse in steering feel than its competition (it’s middle of the pack probably ) it’s that we have higher expectations for a 3 series than a C class or Lexus.

I've never owned or really driven a rwd car to be honest. So no problem for me. I just have a problem with the new 1 being very crossover-esque and too much like its competitors. The compact class in Europe is very tough, no automaker can afford to sell bad cars anymore.

That's kind of my point, it's simply too similar to other cars in its class now
