Trump defends his abandonment of our Kurdish allies by pointing out that the Kurds didn’t help us out on D-Day.

Anyone else remember when Trump said Obama was the “ founder of ISIS” because he pulled some troops out of Iraq? Good times.

Isis would be bombing Europe if it wasn't for them. Shameful day for America.

I’ve heard solid arguments that Clinton basically ignited Al Qaeda when he ordered cruise missile strikes in Afghanistan (and invaded Somalia) in part to take the focus off the Lewinsky scandal.
We’re still paying for that BJ, apparently.

Politicians suck, but that doesn’ t take away from Trump being a dumb hypocrite.

Well it goes back to the CIA and Bush giving the same people support with the Russians and then leaving them high and dry. Much like the Kurds now. Remember most of these ISIS people were Mujahedeen and are Saudis. Most of the prominent fighters in Afghanistan are not from there. I would blame Bush for most of the underpinnings.

Yep, and the mujahedeen connection was never more clear than once we realized in 2002-03 that our Chinooks were being shot down by Stingers from 1981.
I’m not laying blame on any one person, but the Clinton connection was just especially egregious because it had the least military necessity of all the screw-ups we’ve had in the region over the years.

Operation Infinite Reach was carried out because Al Queda blew up two US embassies in a single day. They also had already tried to blow up the WTC in ‘93.
Al Queda was ignited back in the ‘80s when the Reagan administration decided to arm and support the Mujahideen .

They can’t be that solid. Those cruise missile strikes in Afghanistan were in retaliation for al Qaed a bombing our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania killing over 200 and wounding over 4000. If anything the criticism there is that Clinton didn’t take al Qaeda seriously enough.
Somalia started in 1993, so that could at least fit with the timeline, but a whole shit ton of countries took part in that, so singling out the US for vengeance half a dozen years after the peacekeeping operation ended seems a bit odd (not the terrorists can be expected to be super rational).
For bin Laden, the real trigger is said to be the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabi (non-Muslims are not permitted in Mecca, and he reportedly felt the same should be true of the entire nation). He’s not the only one who felt that way, Saudi Arabia kicked out almost all US troops in 2003 once we had made sure Iraq was no longer a threat (or more charitably, because they didn’t approve of the Iraq war, though we had already agreed not to use US bases in Saudi Arabia to support the invasion).

You’re right, I misspoke — the critics were saying Clinton didn’t do enough to finish the job. Not the he conducted the strikes in the first place. In other words, a token effort to appease the hawks.
It’s been a long time since I refreshed myself on that history. I’m still just amazed after the 1993 WTC bombing (and the embassies)
that we didn’t see a major issue. They had the patience and resolve that we definitely didn’t have.

YES. Just because other politicians are shady and commit crimes does not excuse this embarrassment of a president. Politics aside I don’t know how people do the mental gymnastics to tell themselves this is acceptable for their leader.

It keeps cranking up. How long before the spring breaks? And today? Two of Rudy’s pals arrested for campaign finance violations and Ukraine? Damn.

I’m guessing this is not happening because of any anti-interventionist principle on Trump’s part but more because Erdogan kissed his ass enough. What’s a little genocide between aspiring dictators friends ?

Trump will pardon Rudy. Print out a pre-signed pardon for anything he might get caught doing later on.
