It is ironic that their most reliable planes were the ones built 35 years ago. 737-200, 757 200/300, 767 and Queen of the Skies.
Even for passenger comfort (and it pains me to say this) I vastly prefer the Airbus’s extra cabin width and space

Yes, up till the current generation of planes I’d have picked the Boeing over the equivalent Airbus every time (speaking as a passenger). But the A380 and A350 are every bit as good to ride in as the 787, the 737NG is becoming downright scary, and Airbus appears to have their collective quality and process control shit considerably more together than the big B nowadays. Which is a Bog Fucking Deal when you’re trusting your life to these contraptions.
I wonder at what point the 737NG becomes the Note 7 of planes - however fixed it is, you can’t salvage its reputation. It’s be a shame if that’s how the 737 died.

It’s nutty to realize that even the NG had been cost-reduced right up to the point of unsafe. My money still says the delay on the MAX is at least partly due to the authorities figuring out how bad the previous generation (NG) had been scrimped on.
Oddly, it will be the EU authorities (who are NOT on the Boeing payroll, it arises) who have higher safety standards and will demand the MAX be fixed right.

I just realized I’m 41 and have been on an Airbus only once in my life. I chalk it up to mostly flying SWA , but before that it was almost entirely Delta (MD-80 and 767), AA (CRJs), and even Icelandair (757). As a kid, Piedmont flew a lot of 737-200s out of Charlotte as a predecessor to USAir, later AA.
My one experience on Airbus was
hour-long Lufthansa flight on an A320 once from Venice to Frankfurt. But that was it. Out of about 500 hours of commercial flights.

I fly airbus all the time, mainly Virgin fleet that is now part of Alaska Airlines and Delta’s A320's and A319's. I have always felt the Airbus is like an Audi, it has all of the good accessories but they don’t always work correctly. Airbus typically has more burned out reading bulbs, mis-aligned interior panels, and funky gimicks than the 737 but they are better on creature comforts. The 737 always feels like a Chevy Tahoe to me, it will get you there and it’s mostly put together well but has not much luxury .
