I frequently make poutine with shredded cheese (usually mozzarella) at home when I have no curds available and just really need some poutine. But from a restaurant? GTFOH.

Edit: 10/10 would still eat.

Makes me miss when I regularly  had to travel to Montreal.  Poutine and smoked meat...mmmmmm.

This is one of those situations where it’s OK to be holier-than-thou.

If I’m at home and use grated cheese it’s because I’m:

a) having an emergency;

b) am drunk, or;

c) both a) and b)

If I’m paying bar prices for a poutine (and around here that’s probably in the $12-14 range, which is high ) it damn well better be some perfect potatoes, house gravy, and real cheese curds.

Nothing quite beats the random stops at Quebec casse-croutes (no accents and I don’t even know if I pluralized that right) for poutine perfection.

But I agree $100% I would eat that anyway.

This reminds me that, in spite of being such a famous national dish, 90% of Canada can’t make poutine right. I’ve never seen it done properly anywhere west of Quebec.

I’m okay with chips, cheese and gravy.

We don't use cheese curds in the U.K. but nor do we call it poutine, it's not poutine, it's chips, cheese and gravy and I love it just like that.

The thing is the curds is what make it poutine and not just chips, cheese and gravy.  Here in Quebec our poutines have curds.

That’s why ours aren’t poutine and we don’t say it is.

Cheese curds aren’t a thing here.

In fact, if you asked on a Friday or Saturday night after everyone has got pretty bladdered and headed to the chip shop or kebab shop for a pie and chips, doner kebab, pizza, chips cheese and gravy, parmo, etc... what poutine was, I can guarantee, the majority won’t know what poutine is.

Were happy with what we have. Though I draw the line at a doner kebab with grated cheese, though may try it soon and will probably like it. Lol.

Personal confession time, I go to Canada every year, have been now for close to 20 years, and I have yet to have real proper poutine. The only poutine I’ve had is from a little gas station diner in Grand Rapids MB, which is a small, remote, reservation town.  Their fries are still homemade and delicious, but the gravy, while still very good, is likely packet/powder, and they just use shredded mozz cheese. I still get it every year because it’s still delicious, but it’s not really proper.

There are a few places around home who have some really good poutine though, but everyone seems to have to put their own fancy twist on it. BBQ pulled pork, chives, fried cheese curds, etc. etc. Sometimes I just want to keep it simple.
