Essentially no functioning traffic signals for the county so a good stretch of hwy 101 is clogged up 4 way intersections every block. The grocery stores w ith backup power that could open are selling out of candles and water with heavy losses on anything refrigerated or frozen.
The range is electric so I get the pleasure of cereal for dinner until the power come back on.
The county apparently bickered with pg&e until 7pm (5hrs before shutdown ) before officially notifying the public of the power outages for a minimum of 36hrs. No Gasoline , some people with no water, no heat blah blah blah.

5th largest economy in the world yet our infrastructure is this bad, many sections are being cut off of power out of technicality. In order to take select sections out they must turn off the whole grid

So businesses didn’t even get advanced warning of this? That’s asinine to have to waste all that food, not to mention the cost. Even if insurance covers that, someone is ultimately paying the price. What a clusterfuck.
What about emergency services and hospitals? Did they shut off power to everyone?

They are shutting of the electrical grid because of high winds/dry conditions and the risk of another fire like Santa Rosa (2017) or Paradise (2018) both fires started by arching power lines.

If you rely on a well, or any electric water pump your screwed, the grids water is still available but we are told to not use it unless we have to because they are using backup systems.
This is a rural county so it's not a small concern

Hospitals all have multiple redundant generators, a power loss is only an inconvenience to them.

I work at a grocery store, I ordered water a 7am like any other day and only found out about this around 7pm.
This morning at 3am, all the water was sold out, we were running on our backup generator with only half the lights working(no bathroom, breakroom lights). Our canned goods were blown out too. My order sent yesterday for today was forecast for normal sales so immediately got wiped o ut of water jugs
We spent the first 3 hours shuffling everything refrigerated into walk in coolers with our dry ice. 9am as temps crept up e verything refrigerated or frozen was 50% off. Tomorrow what didnt sell is being thrown out

I realize that most hospitals probably have redundant system. I guess it was more of a question of how long can they run on generator power? I guess if they're gas line fed generators indefinitely.

The local power plant is channeling its power to hospitals and the jail. The county was bickering about said plants power allocation.

Hard to argue with the power allocation. Do you want to explain to the public about the prison break because they turned the power off?

What is the store you work at going to do about the loss? Since it's a man-made power outage, would insurance still cover the spoilage?

Well, yes, no argument there.
Not much planning anyone can do with 5 hours notice. Particularly if you were at work.

My thought as well. They got sued into bankruptcy for causing a fire so now they are going to “fix” that problem and everyone is going to feel the ramification of that . They will next come around asking for rate increases from consumers so they can fund the necessary fixes to the grid to prevent future shutdowns.
Hard to argue with them (from a safety perspective) but if they were really concerned about the potential for fires and the impac t on the grid they could have communicated this well in advance and given everyone time to react. .

Propane grill is always a solid backup if you have an electric range and live somewhere relatively temperate. Also, most gas ranges now use electric igniters instead of standing pilots and you’re not supposed to light them with a match, although you obviously could if needed . But s ome are sufficiently drive-by-wire that they won’t work at all without electricity to operate the controls.

You know if enough people do stupid things like run generators indoors and light candles and fall asleep, this is likely to cause MORE fires and deaths than a faulty power grid. Especially the lack of notice, this will just ensure chaos occurs. The predicted humidity and winds were available knowledge at least days in advance. And realistically this happens EVERY year around now so its something that could have been planned for from the top down. I think its perfectly reasonable to shut off the grid in that scenario but you gotta make thorough blackout plans, not just say GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!!!
I would imagine places with hurricanes have considered shutting down the grid in advance of the storm and they have all sorts of emergency plans for people. There is no reason that fire weather couldnt be handled exactly the same.

Its all relative though. They still dont have the humidity of the South/midatlantic/midwest and there certainly arent any damn polar vortex’s in the winter. Depending on how in the mountains they are, snow is not a thing either and rain is only a little more common than down here. But temperatures will also vary wildly depending on elevation and distance from the coast.

Something something PUBLIC utilities.
I think if PG&E, and to a lesser extent SCE, continues with this shit, we may actually see action by the electorate.
Oh wait, that's right, the ballot initiative process isn't actually controlled by the people, but large corporations. Silly me.
