The power company crazy-meter has risen to “1990s rolling blackouts” level of stupid. The map link below links to a Pacific Gas and Electric map. The areas with the black dotted lines are planned outages for tonight. Basically, as a result of years of neglect of the power grid - the only option left is to turn off the power when the wind blows.
This is an entirely solvable engineering problem whether through trimming / clearing of brush, adding failsafes to poles to prevent fires from pulsing, and/or burying lines.
Edit: PGE has also had troubling keeping their website online. “They directed customers to their Twitter handle as an alternative source of up-to-date information.” - I am so glad my mom doesn’t live out here. Telling her to check Twitter would be the last damn straw.

And they are apparently only 1/3 done with their 2019 trimming, and don’t expect to be caught up until 2026 (I wouldn’t bet on it being that quick).
Of course, I don’t get the sense that things are any more broken than they have been in the recent past, just that being driven into bankruptcy by the $20-30B they’ll pay out to settle claims related to the Camp Fire has left them extremely cautious, so with a terrible reputation anyway, why not piss off e veryone to avoid additional liability.

I'm told there are lines at the gas stations this evening as well.

When you have a monopoly, why worry about customer satisfaction?

I bet the people that installed solar panels without batteries are especially mad about this.

And I’ve found it impossible, so far, for my daughter to find a competent auto repair business. It seems like everything in Humboldt county is goofed up.

Hu bbards German Auto repair is about the only place I’d vouch for. Johnsons auto electric also seems fairly professional but I’ve only been there for smogs
H umboldts it’s own little world, up until recently the economy was heavily propped up with weed manufacturing (still is in different ways) and distribution but legalization i s changing the dynamic.(interestingly enough the black market is still booming since growing unpermitted is getting cracked down on more then when it was illegal full stop)

Not yet, I’m sure it sensationalized too many things to enjoy.
I grew up across the way in Briceland , with a parent in the industry(not on any large scale, just enough to make a living)

I think that’s a reasonable thing to expect, but I’m not so sure it did that. My wife and I are sensitive to that sort of thing as well.
