Weird illusion of reverse rake. I remember the old days of E150s with helper springs looking lifted in the rear.

That’s rather quicker than any Transit I can buy - 2.0 diesel only. Then again if the people who buy these for lo
cal deliveries and as work vehicles wanted any more go I suppose Ford would have supp
lied it.

What appeals to me about the Safari is how utile it is. I can fit a sheet of plywood inside on the floor. I can (rated up to) tow 5,000 pounds. Drives well and has been supremely dependable.

That was very much the case for our 1991 Mazda MPV family truckster growing up. Carried people, carried stuff, rwd, rated to tow 4500lbs (smaller boat at the time) and was a bullet proof, if expensive, example of Japanese bubble era build quality. It was chosen in part because it drove and handled so well (unibody, RWD Mazda 929 platform derivative) .
That said, I’m a fan of the current Ford Transit. We rent cargo vans to haul acquired collections from time-to-time. The transit is by far the best driving of the current full-size vans. Most of the other alternatives feel like driving something from a previous era . There’s also like a thousand different configurations the Transit can be ordered in, so I can’t imagine not being able to spec one out to exactly what you want.

That at least ford tried to modernize the van over the GMC Savanna and Chevy Express, idk why I thought the Savanna was the Safari
Basically GM doesn't update their shit and at least Ford has a modern van, even if it's a bit ugly

I haven’t checked numbers yet, but what’s the smallest Transit wheelbase that’ll accommodate a sheet of plywood? Do you happen to know offhand?
Also, what’s this about “acquired collection?” Sounds interesting.

Acquired collections are (sometimes many) boxes of donated papers to the archives and special collections department I work for in the university library . I don’t know on the first question, but my guess would be any of them with a row or two of seats removed.

Sure, but that Alone doesn’t make a good product, the Ford is much better for with Space for one, is still just as repairable, and designed Better for the driver.
Modernization is still a key element in any car

I’m not disagreeing with you, but making my case for an alternative. Driving and maintaining an automobile is a costly proposition. And atop it all is the depreciation.

I blame Mercedes Benz.
Their commercial van started out OK, but then got ugly.
Then Chrysler spun it off as the commercial RAM van, and it got uglier.
Nissan and Ford tried to compete with it, and they got uglier, also.
Now they all look like shipping containers on wheels with a Halloween mask competition to see which can look scariest from the front.

Not really, vans have been diesel-only (or almost so) for decades. Petrol ones wouldn’t make much commercial sense and I
wouldn’t like trying to sell one second hand.

They use about one third more fuel. Fuel’s expensive. Also, diesel is cheaper than petrol.

But particulates... Diesel fuel contains more energy by unit volume than petrol, which can bring about better mileage. Or kilometerage... Is diesel fuel subsidized somehow? In the U.S., diesel is more expensive than gasoline.

Interesting. I want to do van life for 1 month. Renting seems expensive so thinking of buying one, throwing a mattress in the back and selling once I get back.
