Some nice carpentry inside. Are you connected to that church, or just employed in helping build it?

I am liking the throw pattern for those linears. It helps keep the ceiling clean. Half the time I am fighting with architects over single slots. With the double you can get more capacity keep it quieter and condense it all . Just curious, do you know what is the expected occupancy of that room?

Considering Jesus is everywhere and that the whole world is his home it makes having yet another weekend home seem unnecessary.
That said, t he work you guys have done is very nice.

Around 500, although their existing church only seated 250.
The code occupancy is 617, which they’ll definitely hit at the dedication.

It’s one of my projects at our architecture firm. I’ve been working on it since shortly after I started 3 years ago, and I’m acting as the project architect at this point.

The particular sect of Christianity I grew up in completely agrees with your comment.
I’m completely secular at this point.

That was the ultimate deadline, although we’re far enough ahead that dedication is scheduled for November 22.

The infinity edge font is pretty cool. It’ll be even cooler when all the black granite tile is put in it.

I was baptized Catholic. It was only as I grew older that I realized the problems with a large business like the Catholic church.
Maybe other Christian sects are better, but I largely write off religion as a whole. None of it makes sense to me other than the few sentences here and there that basically say, “be nice to others, don’t be a cunt.”
Oddly, it’s Buddhism that speaks to me most with its “truths” much more than a childhood of Catholic indoctrination.

Nope, and I’m not Catholic either so there’s been a steep learning curve. I think it’s turning out nicely and the priest is thrilled.

Something seems weird to me about having such a lavish and (I would assume) expensive building for a church. I know there are limits but would that money not be better spent on the community/congregation? Not that any of that should matter to the people building it.

The previous church and school were literally condemned, and the budget of this project is pretty damn low.
What looks lavish is actually a lot of clever design work to make a nice simple building that looks more expensive than it is, but with robust finishes that will last. I’m not going to tell you the budget, but there are plenty of houses in Wichita that cost more than this entire project did.

Houses being pricier doesn’t mean a lot, but your explanation is kind of reassuring. Sounds very interesting too and amazing that something can look like that (VERY expensive to the layman) when it’s on a budget. Thanks!

Just proof that good architecture doesn’t have to be horribly expensive. I’m not a fan of opulent churches at all, and I think the few big ideas we designed turned out nicely (wooden cloud ceiling, cupola, light well above the cross) without being super expensive. (The cupola was probably the most expensive considering all the compression loads have to go around it, so there is some beefy structure in there)
The congregation there has been getting hand-me-downs for their entire 70 year existence and are so excited to finally have a new building that is truly theirs.

Nice juxtaposition between the maple and the sandstone. (or whatever that block is...)

We talked about using maple originally, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the subtle grain texture. The whole ceiling is a minimum of 14’-0” off the ground, so the wood grain just completely disappeared. Instead its actually all clear finished red oak, which has a ton of grain movement and I think it really makes the ceiling feel more warm and alive.
T he “stone” is a product called A rriscraft, which is a cast block they chisel the face of. We dry stacked it without mortar joints between blocks to make it look as much like limestone and as monolithic as we could.

As you mention it, I can realize the grain, but the color is pretty much maple, isn’t it? And vis-a-vis the grain, I think it’s a good call. Is the oak perhaps a bit less costly than the maple?
I’m a committed churchgoer myself and while that baptismal font, as presented, is more ostentatious than what would be seen in any church building I attend, as we see it in your image, I find it quite striking.
I hope you will share some images when the interior is completed. If it’s not too much trouble, will you ping me when you do? It’s easy to miss things on Oppo.
I’d like to see some images that emphasize the outward appearance. The one shot from across the parking lot doesn’t do it justice.

The font is still in its raw fiberglass and steel form, hopefully the black granite cladding on the inside will tie it all together. They wanted to be able to do full immersion baptisms, so the font had to get fairly large (although this is scaled down from my initial drawings). I’m glad they chose the cruciform layout (they almost chose an octagon and it would’ve fought the architecture) for the font, as it mimics the layout of the church itself.
I’ll definitely make a post when it’s all finished and ready to be inhabited. The radial curved red oak pews should be quite the sight once they’re installed.

I love architecture and I consider myself a builder and fabricator, even though neither of those things is my primary pursuit.
There’s a show we enjoy watching on Netflix: Grand Designs . Do you know it?
