Took the day off work.

Enjoying an Innis & Gunn (their original) and am waiting for a lasagna to cook.

This is pretty much my ideal day off.

For all the problems in my life, I need to remember that overall it’s pretty damn good. Anything I need, I can get, what I want and can’t get tends to be an unnecessary luxury (e.g. a Singer 911 ), and I have enough time off and pay to take a nice, long trip abroad every year. Plus, I have days like today where I can dick around and get paid to do so.

Still, I can’t help but feel something is missing. At this point, I’ve spent half of my life with depression and sometimes it’s tough to understand why I keep living. No, I’m not going/ planning to hurt myself or anyone, it’s more of an existential “why am I alive”. This kind of weird self-reflection always happens on my birthday.

Anyway, it’s time for some day drinking, Super Mario Maker 2, maybe some Destiny 2, and maybe some more self reflection. I hope yall Oppos are doing well today.

Happy birthday!

I know that feeling. As I start my 50s, I look back at all the ambitions I had and all that time ahead of me. Then I think how I’m much closer to the end than the beginning now, and what am I going to do with my remaining time that will make a difference. It’s easy to get bummed.

My antidote is to think of the people whose lives I have touched, especially the child I am raising. I may or may not yet do something that the world will remember, but my life is full of the little blessings that really count. I bet yours is too.

Happy birthday!! Also, I may download destiny 2 again since it’s F2P now. I used to play Destiny 1 and 2 PVP pretty hardcore but I  got tired of Bungies nonsense and left shortly after D2 launched.

We share the same birthday! I’m at work for the day but when I get off I’m going to join you in hanging around playing games for the evening. I’m quite enjoying Astral Chain but I have an itch to play a bit of Splatoon 2.

I do like cake every now and then but I find most cakes so disappointing. Either too much icing, dry sponge, or, god forbid, the existence of fondant.

Cheesecake is fucking awesome though.

I think this is a reasonable approach. Despite what I tell myself sometimes, I know that there are people who care for me and people for whom I care for deeply.

Having children probably changes the equation quite a bit, but I know what you’re saying. At this point, I’d be happy finding someone who understands me; having kids is a decision that seems less sensible to me as time passes. Not that I judge others who have kids (I love spending time with kids because their concerns are much more entertaining than my own) but I’m not sure that I’d be a good father. It’s selfish, but I probably wouldn’t be able to do the same travels that I enjoy doing so much now as an untethered individual.

T here is so much good about life even if one is having an existential crisis.

I got it F2P on Battle.net before it transferred to Steam last week. I did enjoy it so much that I bought the prior DLCs at a big discount before Shadowkeep officially launched.

I personally don’t like the fact that D2 really pushes you to play with others when I prefer the Borderlands type of gameplay which allows me to just level up solo and still get a chance to get all the rare items. It seems like Destiny forces you into playing with others - to be honest, other gamers are usually the last people I want to hang out with since many are so hopelessly toxic.

It’s a great game to just play one match after another with. I used to play alot but haven’t played in over a year due to the provided Wifi at my old apartment blocking gaming servers (they wanted you on the Ethernet to reduce network congestion).

Happy belated birthday.

I like the fact that my birthday usually falls around Canadian thanksgiving, but alas they’re a week apart this year. I always treat our family thanksgiving dinner as a birthday dinner of sorts.

Still, with alcohol plentiful and lasagna almost ready I feel like I’m in a real solid position today.

I’m surprised that gaming put that much load through the network, I would’ve thought constant video streaming would be a much heavier burden for a network.

I’m fortunate to have a wired gigabit connection so I’m typically gaming, torrenting, and streaming video all at once.

One’s purpose in life is quite a big question... I’d encourage you to find a local charity or organization with a mission that you’re passionate about, and commit some of your time every month to making the world a better place (even if it’s just a little bit, in your little corner of the world). Being a part of something bigger than yourself can give you the perspective you seem to be looking for.

I enjoy cooking and most things to do with food . Now that it’s getting cooler I’m going to get back into baking bread; I don’t want a 450 degree oven running in my small apartment in the middle of summer, so it has been a while since I’ve done that (and I love doing it). Plus, the results are usually satisfying.

I think I need a bigger place, though. I’ve really been itching for garage space and a “fun” car that I could work on and slowly mod over time.

It’s a building housing ~1k college students. Gaming would put a noticable load on the wifi network and consoles all have Ethernet ports. They couldn’t block streaming since cell phones and 90% of laptops can’t connect to a wired network.

About 15 years ago, I was actively looking for a college teaching position. I made the finals three times, but didn’t get the gig. Ultimately, I’m glad I didn’t. But in each interview, they asked me, “Why do you want this job?” My honest answer was always this: When I look back on my life and career , I find points where I can say, “If it weren’t for ( person ) , I wouldn’t be here today.” So if I can finish my career and have at least one person say, “If it weren’t for ttyymmnn, I wouldn’t be here today, ” then I count buy life a success (u nless they’re talking about prison) . I was talking to my high school Latin teacher a few years ago, one of those people who definitely falls into that “If it weren’t for them” category. I told her that story, and she said, “And you know, you may never know that person. It could be somebody who heard you play, who overheard something you said, you never know.” Indeed.
