Hiked up to Colchuck lake near Leavenworth after getting dragged out of bed at 4am.

At 8 miles round-trip with just 2300ft elav ation gain, it’s a very approachable hike that just about anyone could do. Even with moderate Plantar fasciitis (a momento from Thailand that has yet to heel 6 weeks later) I didn’t have much trouble.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Temps hovered around freezing, and once we reached the lake we all huddled together under a military issue mylar thermal blanket. First time trying one, and good God. It’s like black magic, witchcraft, and modern sciences all rolled up into one crinkly blanket. Hiking with a guardsman has its perks.

..10/10 would recommend for any locals, or even those traveling to Seattle. The parking lot gets full early , but it’s a small lot so the trail is generally pretty empty. Alternatively you can p ark along the three mile long dirt trail leading up to the lot and pay the $30 ticket you’ll get from the rangers , or park at the bottom and add an extra 6 miles to your trip.

There’s a reason that area is called "The Enchantments"

Have you been? I feel like we might have talked about this previously...

I’m hoping to get a pass next summer to camp so I can fully experience the e nchantments.

That is stunning! Pics like this make  even more excited about my likely move to California.  I had a second interview on Friday with a company in SF that went great and while I’m not counting it as done yet I am hopeful.

You would be so close to so many incredible places. I really want to start a trip in that area, hitting all the local national parks then going all through the Midwest

just a general -

the Achilles stretches are what really helped me - I still feel it and need to be careful but I’m 100% better than a year ago.

and honestly, I can trace the issue to a specific hike - Tolmie Peak last year where the guy I went with wanted to leave immediately so I didn’t get a chance to stretch before jumping in the car

Okay, I’m definitely going to try that.

So this is what aging feels like... I should really start start stretching pre-hike. And post hike.

I haven't. Girlfriend wanted to go last weekend but weather stopped that plan.

I find post hike/activity is super important, pre-hike doesn’t do anything for me. Post activity stretch and a single  Advil work really quite well.

Yeah it's pretty hit-and-miss right now. Hard to know if you'll get clear skies and trails, or two feet of snow unless there's a trip report from the last day or two.

That’s the dream!

I’m in the midwest and there are a few things to see in Missouri but nothing like out west.  The Ozarks in southern Missouri and Arkansas are beautiful and an environment not like anything else.  It’s all very green here with decent fishing.

I also went on a hike today but my views weren’t as cool. I got absolutely shredded by the altitude above 9000 feet so I didn’t make the 10000 foot summit. It was also a 5600 foot elevation change over 6 miles so I’m too out of shape to do that easily. Still had a good day nonetheless!

Haha well there aren’t too many goats in socal but yeah that was a wild coincidence. I’ve hiked mt baldy before and I recall nearly running out of water at the summit and hiking down the whole way with about 0.25L of water. But I made it somehow. This time I was a masochist and decided to take the harder route for some reason and I have done fuck all in terms of exercise since August so it didn’t go so well naturally. I definitely could have made it up "the easy way" but that's quitter talk and i wanted the less traveled route. I saw maybe 20 people the whole time whereas the other route it was more like 20 people per minute.

Honestly I feel like I’d walk through a hike consisting of burning shards of glass if it cut the number of people on the trails by a large amount.

You have any travel plans for the next year? I need some adventure inspiration

My girlfriend is moving to Amsterdam so I'm making many trips to Europe. Right now it's a trip to Amsterdam, a trip to Matterhorn in the Alps, and then a smattering of other trip ideas including Germany, Norway, Paris, and others. I also still plan to ski 30 days although I won't get a three week long trip this time. I'm hoping to do a week in Salt Lake or head up to Revelstoke if I can swing it. But with all of my vacation days stretched thin on Europe I'm probably going to Mammoth more frequently. Salt Lake is doable in a weekend if flight prices are right though!

I did a 6 mile one on Angel Island on Saturday, also extremely chill. Went with a friend who’s recovering from surgery . Absolutely gorgeous views and you could see very far,  the whole way down the bay, to Coyote Hill and Lick Observatory. Ferry ride was awesome as well. I love the Bay Area
