My neighbor is a Travis County Sheriff’s deputy, and he is running for Constable (again). I voted for him last time, and I’ll vote for him again, if only for this awesome little Honda runabout thing he’s using for advertising.

Is the Constable the same as the Sheriff?

I'll never understand America. To be a Constable here, you just have to be hired.

No. As I understand it, the Sheriff’s office deals with criminal law, while the Constable’s office deals with civil law, like evictions, serving warrants, protection orders, etc. . Which is not to say that a Constable can’t pull you over for speeding, or arrest you. In Texas, a Peace Officer (real term) is a Peace Officer.

Different uses of the same term. T he county Sheriff and the Constable are positions like the Chief of Police, except that they are elected positions (the CoP is hired by the city council). The Sheriff and the Constable are then responsible for hiring the deputies that constitute the force .

It varies by state. I live in an area where the local judges are elected. I really don’t understand that one.

Different states use the title different ways. Around me, constables are essentially private police officers, licensed by the state police, and employed by certain special entities (like big hospitals or schools) that receive permission from the government to police their own properties.

Also, in some states, they’re just part-time/seasonal law enforcement officers (usually older, retired police officers) that are hired by small towns that don’t have their own police departments to help out during peak tourism season.
