Not yet. Once I become Supreme Leader of Arizona, I’m instituting a hard border.

Whenever traveling to CA, I always plan my fill ups so I won’t have to buy gas in CA. Your guy’s fuel prices have always been crazy compared to ours, and we don’t have any oil or refineries. Phoenix’s gas is all piped in.

That’s funny. It’s not that bad between Missouri and Illinois but it’s usually $0.50 per gallon. But in Missouri we have almost no social services and have shit roads - so low taxes...
We also have the lowest cigarette taxes in the nation, it's a strange and pretty backwards state I live in.

Always fill up at the Love’s/FlyingJ/Pilot truck stops that are invariably just across the river from CA on the 8, 10 and 40.
I paid $2.20 the other day when I left Albuquerque, then paid over $4.45 in CA that evening for the last fill of the day.

Assuming the base cost for a gallon a premium gas by the California station owner is $2.98, California’s gas tax would only increase that by 60 cents.
Sales tax rate - 2.25%
Prepayment of Sales Tax Rate - $ 0.06
Excise tax rate per gallon - $0.473

Crazy thing is.... people are allowed to move. No one is forced to live in California.

$0.61 a GALLON in gas tax is really not that much at all anyway. I think increasing the gas tax significantly in the US would be good for the country. Especially if you also lower the income taxes on the lower income groups as compensation.

$3.65/gallon at Costco today (SF East Bay area). Less than Needles, more than Mohave Valley.

I will be in Ohio the 2nd half of the week ( visiting the wife's fam)- will have to see what gas prices are like there. CA gas prices are still less than those in Europe...

Its cheap as hell here. Name brand cigarettes still sell for under $4 a pack here. So 40 % of the population still smokes in Missouri.

It ain’t (just) the tax. I feel like I’m stating the obvious, but gasoline sold in CA has different specifications than the rest of the country. The refineries in CA have to blend to a completely different spec (though there are some areas of Arizona that are included, and I can’t recall which). Some refineries in neighboring states will blend CARB gas, but most of it comes from the refineries in state.
This the biggest reason for the price difference from CA to the rest of the country. It is also why prices can fluctuate much more rapidly in CA than the rest of the country - when one of the CA refineries goes down (for planned or unplanned reasons), the supply changes dramatically while the demand remains.
I’m also assuming that the tax chart doesn’t include the various environmental credits that have to be purchased from the state government for on road fuels - those aren’t taxed directly at the pump but are directly correlated to pump volumes. Maybe it does, but the language is is unclear in the footnote.

I was very confused when I returned home from Florida. It was right around $3 for 87 when I left two weeks ago. It was about $2.35 in Florida for 87. Then I come home on Friday and its $4! What the hell happened haha.

Interesting. I didn’t know that CARB regulations had become so stringent on gasoline that we’ve essentially isolated ourselves.
However, at least according to this information I found CA fuel still only costs about 15 cents more per gallon to manufacturer. A $2 difference is astronomical and oil companies are using CARB regulations and our gas tax as a way of gouging consumers.
And while higher fuel costs suck, so does shitty air. CARB is having to do whatever it can to try and alleviate our air quality issues. I shudder to think what the air quality would be like in LA, the Central Valley, or another other part of California which already suffers from poor air quality without different fuel requirements.

Agree, from my limited knowledge the price is definitely driven by good old capitalism and supply / demand.
Not for nothing, but that article is from a decade ago. Demand has increased while refining capacity in CA hasn’t grown with it to the best of my knowledge.
As long as there isn't collusion, I don't generally fault a company for selling a product for what the market will bear. Oil companies can definitely make some real refining margins in CA given the right conditions.

I looked at the date at the very top. I should have looked a little further down.
But for me this is all moot point essentially as I drive an EV as my daily driver. I only have to get diesel once or twice a year. Maybe.
