Why would a website's hit count go down?

On the awesome site trumpdonald.org there are about 67 million hits (67,516,241)

A few months ago there were over 90 million hits!

Why would it go down? Aren’t hit counters cumulative?

I initially though 32-bit signed   integer rollover, but that’s a long way from there. Someone probably screwed it up, hacked it, or similar.
