Both on BaT, both blue, 3 on the tree, 4 door sedans that have been preserved amazingly well.

I would love either one, but I’d pick the Fairlane - 260, 3 speed overdrive, and I’ve always loved the small fins on the ‘ 63.

How about you?

Dodge without a doubt, but I like big fins and I can not lie.

That Fairlane is a special piece, great colors and I too like the rear fascia of 63 Fairlanes, jet age yet almost restrained in a way, there’s a little elegance to it. Not in love with column shift manuals though. When I was a teen,  my dad had a 68 Fairlane, 289/3 on the tree, no power options, and it was no fun to drive, even if the powertrain was solid.

Love the old sales receipt for the Dodge, seems cheap even then. Cars from the zenith of the American middle/working class.

When I was a kid, a neighbor on the next  block had an immaculate black 63 Fairlane coupe, and I really loved that car.

I love a lot of Exner’s work, but it always seemed to me like Dodge got the short straw- Chrysler (and Imperial) got the best, then Plymouth, with DeSoto hit or miss, but Dodge got some weird front ends.

Th ey’re in amazing shape, considering these we re just bread and butter cars back then.

I guess it’s not surprising you’d like the Ford. The small fin is a little reminiscent of the Fintail.

And this   may be the 2nd to last ( non-Cadillac) car to have tailfins. The last being the Fintail?

For sure. The chrome on that Ford looks great. Cool bonus of a trunk full of parts and a nice color.

Agree on all. I also gave it bonus points for the overdrive, which would provide some additional amusement.

I feel like the Dodge should be a 2 tone also - a lot of late 50s cars were a single color, but it always looks odd to me.

I also like some 60s Fords thanks to my dad.   They always play second fiddle to GM, but some are nice designs too.

Some lower line fintails were sold in the US as model year 1968 cars, definitely among the last.

Ford hands down, I've posted about them before I think but I love 62-63 fairlanes. Would prefer a two door obviously but those slight fins are a bit reason, in my mind it bridges the gap between muscle cars and jet age just perfectly.

Cadillac of course started and ended tailfins- they retained them for a loooong time. But after 1962, I can’t think of any fins other than the Fairlane and Mercedes.

Forgot about your Ford connection. Check out this link:

I commented on it earlier but as a kid, my absolute favorite design was the 63 Fairlane.

The fact that a neighbor had a black coupe that was perfect had something to do with it.

I'd go with the Ford as well.

Yeah, I think some cars had kind of fender extensions (think 75 Olds etc) or gingerbread that can be seen as a fin and maybe it is a subjective definition, but true fins really died out after 1962. Of course, this is just American cars, as some Euro cars kept them well into the late 60s, think Peugeot 404 or BMC Farina etc. Fintails must have looked kind of old fashioned by the mid 60s, maybe the front end design of 6 cyl models being used on newer models into the early 70s keeping the cars relevant. MB had a funny justification for the fins, they were really for parking assistance. Yeah right, and you just happened to introduce them in 1959 and never used them again, what a coincidence.

Whoever amassed those Fords would have been approved by my dad. The 60 Country Sedan was the same red as that Starliner, but with a white top (and that Starliner interior I am 98% sure isn’t stock). The 66 Galaxie was dark blue on medium blue, and the Fairlane was white on white, a somewhat striking car even more noteworthy for its odd spec (bold color combo, V8, virtually no other options other than an AM radio) .

That black 63 Galaxie reminds me of a car I knew when I was a kid, owned by a family a few blocks away, I’d see it out now and then, black with a red interior. I was in town a few years ago, as my mom still lives there, and stopped at a yard sale at the Galaxie house. In the garage under a tarp, there was a large car. I told the proprietor “That’s a 63 Galaxie convertible”, which made him smile and talk about the car, probably off the road for 20 years now, just waiting to come back to life.

Really unusual to see a more-door F airlane that hasn’t gotten the Mayberry treatment.

I see a lot of Galaxie sedans done that way, but haven’t seen a Fairlane - that’s a smaller car.

Either would be a more reasonable way to get into old cars than getting a muscle car - yet still a lot of fun!

Ha - I owned a 65 Skylark with that same engine. Also needed carb work...

Needs a closer look - I see evidence of poor rust repair on the RR quarter, but it has some potential.

Thanks! Yes, I do like them - though the Buick 300 isn’t a very exciting engine.
