For the 2012 model year only, Toyota changed the stock radio in the RAV4 to a basic unit that allowed for Bluetooth calling & audio streaming. According to Toyota’s website, RAV4’s before June 2012 are equipped like the photo above, which is completely false. Even RAV4’s with the first steering wheel (like my May 2012 RAV4) have Bluetooth audio and calling.
To further prove this gaffe, Toyota had the 2006-2011 radio in the manual for the 2012. Notice how there’s no phone button; the manual’s steering wheel instructions are good for this radio, but the 2012 RAV4 before June 2012 doesn’t have that radio.
This is the stock radio in every 2012 RAV4 without Entune. As the AC controls show, this is a base model. Notice the phone button, too. This unit allows for Bluetooth audio streaming and calling. The build date for this one?
January 2012, one of the first builds for the 2012 RAV4. Toyota distributed owner’s manuals like the one online to RAV4 models built before June 2012. Because of what the manual said, I was led to believe for the first few years that my mom’s (now my) RAV4 didn’t have Bluetooth at all. I thought the salesman didn’t know what he was talking about when he wanted to set up Bluetooth in the RAV4. Once I started driving the RAV4 was when I realized Bluetooth was there the whole time. It’s just crazy that an error this glaring was in the manual for a car so popular, especially with a feature as important as Bluetooth.

Want to hear an interesting story? Toyota doesn’t care. I found a mistake in a Tacoma brochure once...not a missing period or transposed letter. It was a completely wrong spec for off-road angles.
I wrote to them and they actually wrote back.
“Please be advised that the information provided was incorrect and thank you for bringing this to our attention. The brochure is printed before production is complete and information about this is listed under our disclosures on the brochure.”
TLDR - hey you’ re right? the solution to this is that we will do absolutely nothing but point you to a little asterix on the brochure that says that we can’t be bothered to bring you accurate information once a product actually goes on sale.
Because it’ s an owners manual there may be some legal argument to be made about a recall but...good luck with that.
Look, I get that re-printing is expensive but you know what isn’t? Updating a PDF and a website to reflect the accurate information.
Want to know the best part? They sent me the “correct” information it should be...AND IT’ S WRONG! A different kind of wrong but equally as wrong.

Yikes! The fact they even make a distinction between build dates when all of them are this way is what makes it worse. This isn’t something super serious, but now that these RAV4’s are flooding to teenage girls as first cars and hands-free laws are in certain places , it’s definitely good to know for certain if a car has Bluetooth audio and calling . Plus, using a cord to play music is a pain. I could never get the aux or USB to work for playing music, so I’m glad I have the Bluetooth.

Wow, this blew up with barely any comments.
Here’s my RAV4.

Im confused at what you're saying here...I have a 2010 RAV4 v6 limited and although it had an aftermarket head unit when purchased, it does have steering wheel phone controls, but it seems like you're saying pre-2012 cars didn't have Bluetooth at all...

Some pre-2012 RAV4’s had Bluetooth, but it wasn’t standard. Instead of steering wheel buttons in some cases, 2012 RAV4’s control the phone through the radio.

My 2012 Rav4 has the Bluetooth through the radio. I wish it had the buttons on the steering wheel. Lately though it seems to be sluggish and slow to connect to my cell phone. Every now and then I have to reprogram my phone in the Bluetooth system. I don’t know why.
